Flourescent on our own stand at SignUK. Honestly the first time I had ever used the word, that’s my excuse. The only spelling mistake I have ever done.

Hand Painted three times with outlines and shadows on a pub fascia

Harry’s excuse is that he didn’t have mush room for the ‘r’

😀 😀 😀 never thought of that one! Problem was it was handpainted on a scroll on PVC tarp….oh the grief! Thank God it’s a distant memory

‘Developmemt’
About 10 years ago on a stainless steel plaque for a fancy opening. I was ‘Q.A.’ so the engraver typed it wrong, he checked his proofs, I checked the proof, then passed the final. Customer passed it…but a guest noticed it. Whoopsie!
From that day on, I’ve checked the LETTERS not just the words!
Other than that it’s pretty rare a mistake hits the customer, ‘oblogation’ did about 5 years ago as part of a window graphic was another that made it past me, and the customer checking the drafts…eagle-eyed passerby did though.

"Munucipal" ….on a 600 x 400 engraved brass sign, discovered 4 hrs before HE the President of the Republic of Namibia was to open the new "Municipal Water Treatment Plant." Fortunately the entire top brass of government and the bulk of the cabinet are semi-literate at best, so I was the only one to notice…..

Contsruction,

"TUMA MAYO & SWEETCORN" on a menu board inside a posh cafe a few weeks ago.
Put the boards up, and the owners smarmy sons says "the signs are really nice but it’s a shame about the spelling error…"
Yeah right I thought – heard that gag a million times – Then I looked up at the board.
Ah F e c k !!!!
Cheers

Seven years ago, when the new century, and the associated computer bug, was on everyone’s mind, my favourite was "millenium".
I took great pleasure in advising lots of very large companies and agencies that the most important part of a millennium strategy was to learn how to spell it.

We put 5 signs up at a theme park here. 3 signs said ABSOLUTELY NO TUBES ON THIS RIDE – and a list of rules and conditions of entry. 2 Signs said TUBES OK on this ride. Problem was we put them exactly where we were told, in concrete. No one paid any attention to what was actually on the sign
3 months later, and american lodged a legal claim that the theme park was a safety hazard. It was only then that it was noticed that one of the NO TUBE signs were actually put in front of the only tube rides in the park. 😳 Proof to me that no one reads theme park signs anyway…
At the same park we had the sign ‘No Responsability Taken ….. That sign was up for 5 years before an american school teacher bought it to someones attention. Its still there after 9 years. They reckon if it took 5 years to see error, then it can stay there 😕

Blimey, fancy having a Yank correcting your spelling! They make their spelling up as they go along. Color, for example. That isn’t a real word.

WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO POST THE ERRORS
I haven’t noticed one yet.
I find even when I spell it right the longer I look at it the more wrong it looks

I was doing a job a few years back for Pearce for a new Spa in Edinburgh. Anyway I took all my drawings up to them to go over them before I went on to cut the vinyls. They looked at them all and said, great, just go ahead.
Then , thankfully, their production manager noticed I’d put
CHANGING ARSES instead of CHANGING AREAS………………
would have been funnier if it had gone unnoticed until after it was installed in the Sheraton :lol1: -

Stationary – indicating the area for pens and pencils – even spell checked it 😳
John
-
John, thats the same mistake I made 😳
My spelling is really quite bad and I don’t trust it at all, I always use the spell checker for everything I do just to be on the safe side, doesn’t help in cases where you have got the spelling right but just used the wrong meaning of the word though.

Well,
I have been guilty of most of the above, but the best one was not so much a spelling mistake. I’ve done a quick layout of a sign I did to be fitted at a friends newly refurbished pub. The sign was in three sections in a panatrim frame. Well, luckily I was standing talking to the customer whilst the fitters were sliding the boards into place. First one, no probs, then they missed out the middle and slotted the third one in. – I wish I had my camera with me to capture the result! Couldn’t have been planned any better. -
dinhy instead of dinghy on 3000 labels
and most recent one dianostic on 1000 cardswere only human

I did a really posh motel in the really expensive part of town last year.
They wanted Gaming Lounge hanging from the roof, over the entrance.
I did all the artwork, they rejected the fonts style, I did more artwork, they rejected the colour choice, I did a third example and they loved it.
Went back to the office, sent them a full colour proof and asked them to sign it, before I would proceed.
They sent back the signature with really nice words about the effort I’d put in, praised my professionalism etc. I was really chuffed.
When I printed it, and laminated it, and laid it on dibond, my customers that saw it being done, all gave their seal of approval.
I turned up to the motel, and the big brass was there doing an inspection with the local management.
I stood on a ladder, they gave me directions… up to the left… down to the right.
When I’d finished, they patted me on the back, the big brass promised me more work… everyone (12 people) shook my hand, asked for business cards…. I was really happy as I’d been trying to get in to this motel chain for some time.
I left with everyone very happy, smiles all around.
I’d been gone 10 minutes and I get a call on my mobile.
The manager says ‘you @#$%# idiot, how do you spell ‘Gaming’? I thought he was having me on, I said how do you think you spell gaming? He said ‘with an ‘n’!. I said what are you on about?
He said ‘you can forget being paid for this job… you’ve spelt it Gamimg Room!!!.
I was so embarrassed, but he was really embarassed when I asked him to check the proof that he signed. He realised that it was spelt the same way on the proof… I said your mistake, but I’ll fix it of course..
He called me all the names under the sun, questioned my heritage and all. I said I wouldn’t fix it until he agreed to pay me.. which he did.
What really upset him, was that while all 12 were patting each other on the back, this unemployed printer came up and said ‘Sign look fantastic.. but what does Gamimg mean?
I still chuckle about that even now. Unfortunately I never got any more work from them since 🙁 I can’t imagine why 😕

I sent 150 signs for an exhibition in Munich and put refridgeration on at least 26 of them. It was on cheap card so couldn’t be peeled off and I have no idea how they managed over there
-
Jim, the old ones are still the best :lol1:
Just reading back through some of the mistakes made and I have also done the same thing George did with the telephone number, only on one van though so not quite as bad as Georges, funny thing was that the customer was driving about like it for almost a week without noticing, it was one of his neighbors who spotted it and asked when he had changed his telephone number. Don’t know how many times he got in and out of the van during that time but the number was on the door so he must have seen it every time he got in.
-
Martin,
I’m sure you have driven past the minto lounge in Lochgelly. Next time you do, check the joins and you’ll see what I mean. Like I say, couldn’t have been planned that way. -

There is actually one on our website in a photo that is a direction sign that we have not yet removed, but I cant advertise that here
-
lol, i’ve had a couple,
a van was driving around for over a year with appointments not neccessary
a sign on the pier, whislt instead of whilst, it’s still there !!
i had to write ‘gardener’ in reverse on the bonnet of a transit, we looked at it for a while, but three of us couldn’t quite work out what wasn’t right, i sat in my car and looked in the mirror, all was then clear "Garderner" needless to say it was changed immediately !

My best …and only howler,
Picadilly ( I only put one ‘C’)…3 times on the front of the Trocodero Centre in good old Piccadilly Circus. It was supposed to be a temp job for 6 months or so until the new neon one turned up. It took 4 months for someone to notice it and by that time it had been replaced by the new sign. It looked so good I took a pic of it. I still have it in my portfolio!
…..hand painted and everything…..looked fab….apart from the obvious of course.
