Your thoughts please! Pub Sign
Hi All,
A friend of mine has taken over a local pub and asked me to help with the re brand. This involves designing the logo(almost done) and sorting the 2 signs on the building out.
I have looked at the signs and they are in pretty good nick so we will use these(1 wood, 1 is metal).
Basically i was thinking of paining the signs and then applying cut vinyl lettering and logo(whippet dog) and then whacking them back up.He mentioned lettering that is raised from the board, is this expensive to get cut out so that i can apply to the signs?
Ideally it would be a dark green text and the dog would have to be cut as well. Timescale is bit of a bugger as he wans to open within a month?
I have put some pics below to show you what it looks like at the moment.
Any advice / tips would be great.

My tip is paint the building.
Without seeing some sort of design people can’t comment.

Yeah sorry.
This is the general design and color scheme i am thinking color.
Exact color and font are still subject to change but this is virtually there.
What do you think?and yeah the walls are being painted at the moment!!!

Sorry.. prefer the original signs (except that pubmaster bit)

Don’t like that dog at all – doesn’t suit the sign.

I don’t see the tie with the name and the dog.
What about a coat of arms instead, just a thought.

Try substituting a different dog image into the design?

Hi,
Yeah basically the Holford Family coat of arms was a whippet.
So i was given a tiny jpeg and said was asked to recreate.
I think i will end up having a coat of arms type white shield behind it to put it into context.As for the gold thats a matter of opinion, maybe for the nags head in peckham in the mid 80’s!

Ed, make up your design and get a company like this to cut out the letters and dog shape. You can apply layered vinyl graphics to the profile shape.
Just send the files full size .ai for production.
They’ll supply it all on stand off mounts plus a template for fitting. -
IMO the text size is far too large, not enough ‘white space’ around it and I would rather see a bit more space between the lines. As for the dog….it’s already been said.

The dog and the colors are both too "modern" looking, in my opinion.
(although I like the dog, he doesn’t match the age or style)
Needs more negative space, less emphasis on the "The"
What color is the building being painted?

If you have to keep the dog, make it smaller so it fits into the crescent shape and or keep it all one colour & reverse it out of a shield shape or similar as you suggested. Make ‘THE’ smaller than ‘HOLFORD ARMS’ & increase the kerning on ‘FREEHOUSE’ – you can get away with ridiculous amounts of kern on that word 😉
If you’ve room, try to keep some kind of line work or embellishments in there too, especially if you’re going down the traditional look route.
