  • yacht varnish on vinyl?

Posted by Myles Brewer on January 24, 2011 at 10:04 am

    Hi All,

I have a customer with a food trailer which they have hand painted some murals onto & then I have added some cut vinyl & some laminated printed graphics to.

They are wanting to apply something like yacht varnish to the trailer to protect the murals. Would it be safe for them to cover the vinyls also with the varnish, or could it react with the vinyls?

    Thanks
    Myles

    I would not advise this.
As a hand painter I have been taught my whole career not to clear-coat (varnish) lettering enamel.
It can fail before the mural, i.e. yellow or craze, or even peel up.
I know that it’s OK to clear-coat (with automotive clear) over some vinyls.
But that thing sounds like a mixed bag of tricks, and adding one more ingredient to the recipe may kill the stew if you know what I mean.
    Love…..Jill

    Hi Jill,

Thanks for that, yes I hadn’t thought that the varnish could go & yes it surely is a mixed bag.

It’s actually second hand food trailer which they have titivated (is that a pc word these days 😮 ) up with a bit of gloss paint. Not too sure how long that will last to be honest, So my main worry would be if the vinyl reacted badly with the varnish in the short term.

    I wouldn’t do it.

What is the trailer made of Myles?
I have varnished over vinyl before (in the last 5 yrs) and I see no issues yet.
But I do agree that what Jill says is possible.
If it’s all on a gloss paint finish then it will come down to how long that is likely to last.

    Hi Harry,

It’s one of those aluminum framed box trailers with panels made from something like formica coated timber, but that’s now been coated with gloss paint, so yes it would depend on how well that lasts.

To be honest it’s one of those things that looks like it won’t last five minutes but will probably still be going strong in 6 or 7 years.

One of my first jobs about 7 years ago was putting 2-3yr (wouldn’t dream of doing this now) vinyl on the back of a recently hand painted truck trailer back doors. The paint was still sticky when the guy delivered it & the wind blew over night & covered the back with grit & sand. I thought OMG this will never stick & told the customer as much, but he said to go ahead anyway. So I did & It’s still on there now!!! 😮

Have to agree with Jill, vanish will generally fail before enamel, and vanish over vinyls is obviously pretty pointless. But the better quality the vinyl, the longer it’d last without problems if you must do it.
