  • Wrapping over rust, can it be done? Advice please?

Ok so finally got myself a van, good few years old but it’s solid so not going to complain although it’s got a bit of rust 🙁

I’m planning on wrapping it one panel at a time so I can work my way around sorting minor issues

Van is white but thinking of a white carbon wrap so it’s not much different but nice and clean (and eventually the one colour)

Is it ok to wrap over some little patches of rust?

Also what’s everyone’s preference on wrap vinyl for an all over wrap? Carbon white preferable

Sure you can, just dont expect the wrap to hide anything much. 😮
If the rust is at the edge of a panel or in a depression it will need treatment to get the vinyl to stick to it.
3M primer should do the trick.
I have wrapped a few rustbuckets in the past :lol1:
A muticoloured wrap with a confusing image is better at hiding flaws in the paintwork.

That’s why I was thinking of doing the carbon white so it will hide the flaws, tbh the van isn’t that bad. I’m going to order some new panels anyway for some bits

The rust along the bottom I’ll treat, what do you recommend?

Use Avery Supreme. its a very forgiving media to install but like every vinyl, it has to be installed using the proper procedure.

    Ditch the Carbon wrap…
what you will save in buying carbon, you will nearly double your amount of regular wrap vinyl. dependant on source and brand of course.
Plus, have you ever seen a full carbon wrapped car, looks like hell on wheels. 😉 :lol1:

    Rust pulps and flakes paint.
your adhering to the paint. so what you may hide a bit with the wrap, will still come away over time.

you could rub down and flatten the rust, but you leave a matt poor finish. this will limit the wraps adhesion, again creating a fail over time, if not within days/weeks.

Full carbon wraps look rubbish. Especially white carbon..

    Hi John
I agree, Carbon wrap has had its day.
It looks fine on smaller, detail work but not for large panels, especially in white.
If you can afford to wrap the whole thing in white carbon, surely you would have been better saving your money and buying a better van with no rust ???
Only my opinion but doesn’t seem cost effective.
If you intend to wrap it, then a nice printed pattern will be far better, cheaper and will help hide imperfections. Let us know how you get on
