  • would banner vinyl be suitable for sails?

Posted by Cheryl Tissington on February 21, 2005 at 3:59 pm

    Hi there,
can anyone recommend a vinyl to use on a large sail that will be bobbing around on a yacht in the Med !

I need to produce an aztec image, 4 foot in diameter to go onto a very large sail.

I’m a little bit unsure if banner material will do the job.

Would really appreciate any help as I don’t want to get this wrong – It’s for a very wealthy customer !

    Thanks a lot,

    Cheryl

    Hi Cheryl

I depends on what the sail is made of

Racing sails tend to be made of a shiny film like material that we have used banner vinyl on.

If the sails are made of a woven material it may not work.

Sailmakers use a sticky backed woven nylon meterial which they then sew on

PS are you going to printwear and promotion at the NEC at the weekend

    Hi Paul,
thanks for that. I sent my client a message asking what the sails were made from earlier today as I was thinking along the same lines as you.

I called all print supplies today too and they thought the magsoft 900 might do it although it says its not suitable for curtain sides due to the movement. They also suggested stensil & paint !

I’ll wait until the client comes back to me with the material and go from there.

Thanks for letting me know about the show at the NEC. I’m only about 15 minutes away from it but I didn’t actually know it was on. It could cost me a fortune. I went to the trophy exhibition a few weeks ago and the postman delivered an epson printer this morning from the transfer press !

As it happens I’m going to the boat show this friday, goodness knows what I’ll buy there !!!!! 😀

Yer you should use Dacron for standard sails. I cut it on my Roland plotter so should be the same with others, quite heavy stuff so it may blunt the blade somewhat.

    Cheers

    hi Dave,
thanks for the info. Is dacron just like ordinary vinyl and where would I get it from ?

    cheers,
    Cheryl

    Hi Dave

Has the dacron got an adhesive backing or does it have to be stiched
