  • Workshop size and what’s you squeezed into it?

Doesn’t really apply to the big boys 😮

But what have you managed to fit into your workshop space?

I work from home as most of you know

11ft x 16ft garage (with loft space thankfully for stock)

SWF 1501 Embroidery machine, Roland SP300, Graphtec cutter, 3 heat presses, computer station with dual montiors (that take up more space than everything else in the workshop) lots of storage racks and an ample 5x3ft cutting table

Upgrades are more about space than the cash :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

I think Hugh makes incredible use of the space available in his shed.

Absolutely everything unnecessary (that does not result in increased productivity) is deliberately left out to maximise the space available for essential sign making activities.

However, from this angle – it’s impossible to tell if Hugh is one of the big boys 😕

now how did I know exactly what I’m gonna gonna see before I opened this thread? lol.

almost 5yrs on – just for comparison i took a new pic (not a naked one this time!), it’s a bit of a bombsite at the mo as i’ve been pretty busy of late, stock everywhere that needs putting away properly!

for a 12×8 workshop I reckon I do ok though! it’s all gonna be moved soon though (workshop and all!), not a task i’m looking forward to!

How do you guys do it??

Hugh, is that 12 x 8 ft or meter. In 12 x 8 meter I can see myself working, but if you are referring to ft….. RESPECT !

PS. I made a free standing sign end of last year that was 10 x 6 meter.- 30 x 18 ft. In surface area, about 5,5 times bigger surface than your shop.

The only thing constructive I could do in a 12 x 8 space also involves dropping my pants, and taking the sports section along…..

Hugh, sorry it’s a bit obscured I can’t see, is that a 24inch you have there or is it a tiddler?

Want any tips on moving?…. I just done it, and have to say even at 750 sqft my old workshop didn’t look much different to your shed…… a little less hairy in the harse department maybe but generally just as cramped

Mate pop up to the weald some time and have a corfee at the new place you’d be most welcome

    Gert,
Ft mate! Trestles and scaffold boards in the garden do the bigger jobs – weather dependent!!

I do some relatively big jobs, 6x1m illuminated trays, etc, if I can’t do it in house I buy in, it’ll price me out of some jobs but I do ok!

Put an offer in on a local unit last year but got beaten To it by a mate of the landlord & agent! shame as I had big plans for it! It’ll come up again no doubt!

Mo, will do mate, you’re tenterdon way arent you?

    Hugh,

About 4 years ago I was moonlighting from my "flat" – The "braaikamer" – for lack of translation "BBQ room" was about 4 x 8meter, and a 6x3m Garage. Even then, I frequently ran out of space, with T-shirts / stencils for wall signs in the lounge, washing and drying screens in the bathroom etc. And that was just doing my part time jobs ( My employer did not do screenprinting or brush work, so I subbed my employer’s work over weekends and in the evenings to try and scrape enough together to feed my family AND save for my own business. Worked 10 -12 hours at the regular, and another 4 – 8 hrs at home. Weekends I could work 2x 16hr days.)

I’ve got about 4500 sq. ft now, and still not enough space at times.

My next "business" is going to be a 15 000 hectare farm in a beutiful desert area. I gave myself until I’m 45 to achieve that dream. On 150sq.kilometres I should be O.K…..I think

I’d get lost tween pc and cutter if i had 8x4m to play with, i’d never find the stock! I guess i’m just very good at utilising space, I don;t print in house, no screening, I do garment vinyl / clothing, sign vinyl and most o my smaller jobs in there with little problem. would always be nice to move onward though, just need to find the right place. got my eye on a superb little unit which is for rent or sale, not sure what to do yet though,

good luck with the farm, always nice to have a dream to chase, if you can reach it then best of luck!

that was Pluckley where they filmed that, there is a bloke over the pub called tim (hes a local farmer) he drives an old tractor to the pub when he has a drink or 6, but he is the double of David Jason, first time I saw him I nearly fell off the stool in the bar, lol he’s a complete Pa Larkin too…lol

My village is very very small, but it has a large industrial estate in it and there is a high volume of "london commuters" living here, so I get a lot of work locally, daft stuff like signs for parties, house signs etc. Not to mention the odd run of 10 tshirts for a mums on tour weekend. Fortunately I have 2 young kids at the local primary school, so mrs has all the mums on facebook in her pocket lol. Small villages can be quite lucrative

Well I used to work out of my living room in a flat in Essex. Then since we have moved to Worcestershire it was still in the living room of our new house for a period of time until we built the office extension on the back of the house. So I now have a 4.5m X 4.5m office, plus 4.5m X 2m Store Room tucked under the exciting kitchen, it works a treat. 🙂

Only thing is I’m not sure If my big table is too big now as takes up half the room but it is great to be able to space stuff out and work with ease.

I co0nverted my garage into a workshop and office, that was 2.5m x 6 but outgrew that as soon as i got the versacamm, then i got the ropey old ant invested workshop for £400 a month, now we have 1500sqft of luxury for £200 a month lol, work that one out!

You do have a right bargain there Mo especially as its less than 3mins from your house…

My next idea is a nice big working garage at bottom of garden (hard to explain but garden lower than house and have access at back and front.) So can do signage and wrapping in a nice clean area.

lol 3 mins, it only takes me that long if I crawl on my stomach towing a cow behind me….

Made one of my neighbours laugh the other day, i’m a part time fireman, and the wife had to use the car so I needed my bike at the unit so i could cycle to the station if my beeper went off….. I went in riding my bike… he said, don’t tell me you cycled in this morning? I said well I have to keep feet now my business isn’t so far to walk….lol

Funny thing was, by the time i got on it and pedaled twice, i was there…lol and it’s down hill so could free wheel!
