  • Window Markings for safety purposes?

Posted by Pryam Carter on November 11, 2005 at 9:20 pm

I’ve a job to do this week that involves marking some windows for safety purposes.
The windows need to be marked so Joe Public can see that they are marked and doesn’t walk in to them.
Mind you the building is a solicitors so they wouldn’t have to go far to get a brief (!)

Is there any specifications that l must adhere to for this type of thing?
ie. height of markings, distance between markings.

    Help please.

i dont know about any offcial regs, but i would have thought that 150mm etch circles at about 1200mmm high should be visible by all !

i cant be accurate here mate because i simply cannot remember the details i have been given. but. from memory, the level they should be at is between kid level and adult level viewing. (i know, so whats that level?)
but… i did a fast food place a while back and was asked similar. this time it was two rows of markings, this time kid level and next adult eye level. again i dont know the reg requirments, but even if i did. i now not sure if they have introduced a second level of markings?
as tyou know they markings can be as simple as an etch circle/dot to wavy lines etc etc

I dont know what the regs are, but a good place to start may be the window film suppliers like johnson, the may know or point you in the right direction

I haven’t found any specific regulations, although regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 does mention something.

The following is taken from the Approved Code Of Practice document of the above regulation (paragraph 150).

150 A transparent or translucent surface should be marked where necessary
to make it apparent. The risk of collision is greatest in large uninterrupted
surfaces where the floor is at a similar level on each side, so that people might
reasonably think they can walk straight through. If features such as mullions,
transoms, rails, door frames, large pull or push handles, or heavy tinting make
the surface apparent, marking is not essential. Where it is needed, marking
may take any form (for example coloured lines or patterns), provided it is
conspicuous and at a conspicuous height.

I would say as long as the window is clearly marked, there shouldn’t be a problem. If there are children and adults, then markings at 2 heights should be more than adequate.
