    Hello all,

Have you ever heard of regulations for putting window graphics of shops or office windows?

I did some work for some blokes starting up a taxi cabs company, as if we need another one. I spent alot of time giving them my ideas and experiance.

I finished the job they wanted done, and as I was going their way to do another job. I noticed that they had the windows blanked out in bright red vinyl with skinny horrible lettering that did not even show up well.

When I asked them "Why did’nt they ask me to do it for them." The said that the owner of the the building said he new a company that knows the regulations on what can go on windows. I’ve never heard such a thing. If anything regulation would not let you put graphics on glass windows incase of a fire and you need to smash to get out. With vinyl all over the glass would make if difficult to break the glass.

Is the sign company that did it for them just pulling there legs about regulations for window graphics?

    Your comments please

    Kind regards from
    Mark

    Hi,
I have done a job that was on a set of office windows and had been drawn up for me , i just cut the job & applied it in etched glass but the job was in 700mm wide strips with a 20mm gap between each piece, when i quizzed the man who did the drawing he said it was like this for regs so you can smash the window if need be.

I thought this was a load of poo as there was doors at each end.

Thanks for your comment, the job that they had done, the whole window pain is completely covered, so that cant follow any kind of guide lines that you mentioned. You’d never be able to smash the glass easily

I have covered some windows in a large high st company that are very strict on fire & safety, we have covered nearly all the windows in the store without any gaps and this has been fine with no problem they where more concerned about the flammability of the material on the windows.
    Cheers Phil

What about windows that are bomb proof, you can’t smash them .I think that if the window has an opening window and you fix it shut, then this might break some sort of regs for escape.

I’d be surprised if anyone was expected to smash a window in a fire. That is just adding hazard to hazard. Isn’t that why they have regulations for fire escapes?

so realy, its safe to say that there isnt any regs for windows. I’ve blanked loads of windows, such as solar film, etch and normal vinyl. I think theyve just had someone pulling their legs, just to get the work out of them

To the very best of my knowledge – no general regs for covering windows in vinyl. (Maybe in gov or MOD?) In any case – standard vinyl doesn’t stop it breaking, as it cracks with the glass. I always thought it was polyester films for ‘shatterproofing’ glass.

The only regs to do with ‘Health & Safety’ and windows / glazed doors is that glass coverings such as curtains & blinds must not interfere with the normal operation in the event of an evacuation.

Like Dave R said – it’s actually pretty difficult to break D/G, especially toughened by hitting of kicking (generally needs a pointed impliment to break). Besides – if it isn’t toughened the shards of glass would pose a massive health risk.

Methinks ’tis another pseudo reg to get the business. Maybe I should invent some more…"Naw, sorry mate – we’re not allowed to apply vinyl to your car without a note from your mum". "As of last week, Curlz MT and Comic Sans are illegal…"
