window graphics: hansons menswear
Gray is that on the outside ? if so how do you get away with it 😆 never seen a serious business with lettering on the outside, its recognized here that you always letter the inside in reverse or is the window heavily tinted ?
LHF font by the way ? nice. -

Now Gray: on Vinyl versus Signwriting on glass
This is where I think most traditional signwriters hail the coming of the vinyl age when it comes to glass.
Spent years signwriting on glass in reverse-extremely tiring and time consuming. If not brushed right the streaks become evident when the light shines through. Of course you can block in your work but this again requires another day. Then yet another to laquer finish.
Tell you a story now if you got the time to listen
Many years ago I was asked to do a bullet list on a window.
About twenty lines of bookman (serif) at about 40mm high
All done in brush – took me all day in fact going into the night 😮 😮
It was about December time and extremely cold
They had not yet moved into the premises yet so there was no heatingIt was now getting late and condensation was just beginning to appear on the window
Thought no more about it
The next day it should have been a simple matter of brushing some protective laquer over each letter – about half a days work
Just checked to see the signwriting was properly dry and…….
it just peeled of the window!!!Not one bit had adhered to the window it was all in place but just floating on condensation. A whole days work just being wiped away in a few seconds. (:) (:) (:) (hot) (hot)
I just wanted to 😥 😥 😥
So I do agree vinyl is the way to go for windows
Safer, quicker, cheaper and in some instance looks better

Is it superimposed on, in Photoshop (?).John I had a similar thing happen to me, got a job doing a small wood fascia, because it was in poor condition the owner asked me to paint it, before putting up s/steel letters which I did…
“Good job do you fancy painting the whole outside of the shop”.. “Yes” I say, next day we start to paint, 10 hours (half the shop done) later just as we are off home it started to spit with rain. 😮
Needless to say, when we arrived the next morning, the part we had painted was a new age tie died mess with a yellow lake around it.. 😥 -

well shame on you.. look at the picture below at the point of the arrows.
it shows (only in the shadow of window) a small hallo of light blue.
this is actualy were the vinyl isnt touching the glass. which means the job has a double layer. this would have been impossible to see if applied on the outside of glass. 😉

This thread has raised a point that has often puzzled me (not that difficult to do)
Why do signmakers always lettter glass on the inside. After all the vinyls used are outdoor durable (used on vans and exterior signs), so why should convention dictate we always reverse cut and apply inside.
I have to admit – on some occasions I have lettered the exterior of the window (because of difficulty getting access due to a window display) but I usually try and letter windows from inside because this is what the customer expects.
Why do we do it this way? (?)

So that the Window cleaner can wack away with his Squeegee and not knock the stuff off! That’s my understanding anyway? On the basis that most businesses have the outsides done all the time and the inside when they feel like it! (:)

I reckon it could be down to kids.. They don’t give a second thought to vans etc as they think it is painted on. Glass makes the vinyl look floating on the outside and looks far more apparent. Draws your eye to the fact it’s applied outside. High up its fine, but most shops have large windows and kids hang around. Once they dog-ear one bit they will probably persist till it’s a mess or all off.
Another reason maybe window cleaners! Graphics are on long term..
They would cause water lines running down clean windows where the graphic held the water.. They also could not clear this area of dirty water as the water squeegee cant get into the areas needed as the vinyl holds it off contact with the glass.Just my thoughts.. I could be wrong!
