Window Frosting – Help! Need Some Info / Insight
Good day,
Hope some people might be able to assist. I am going to be frosting a storefront window (1300mm wide by 3160mm length) I would like to use a wet method on a Hexis S5DP Etched Glass Series vinyl as recommended. A little more information about our climate: Hot most of the year, the temperature is from 25C/68F to 35C/95F and were I’m based there’s very little to no moisture.
Here are my concerns:
• The application will be for a hair salon, would this affect the vinyl in any way? – Heat, moisture etc.
• I will be applying the frosting via wet method and the area to be frosted is quiet large so should I use a larger squeegee?
• Currently I use a basic solution sprayer, I feel this job requires a pressurised pump sprayer what are your suggestions?
• This is the first time I am applying to such a large area so any extra tip or tricks would be much appreciated.Thank you for your time.

I’ve done windows bigger with a basic sprayer and all was good, make sure you use a nice felt squeegee, i use one about 6 inches wide, does the job in double quick time, does your etch have a design cut in them? if not it will go on in breeze.

I’d say this is quite a big size to do on your own regardless of experience.
Get someone to help you rather than struggle, a second pair of hands and a second spray… And finally make sure you get all the water out afterwards.

Even tho the basic sprayer will do the job a pressurised pump sprayer will make it go easier and faster.
As its a hairdresser you may need to give the windows an extra clean as stylist tend to use lots of hairspray which can build up on windows.
When your ready to apply the vinyl wet the window and and tack the face of the vinyl on to it, this should hold the vinyl while you peal off the backing paper, and then soak the adhesive side and flip over and apply. on a length that big better an extra pair of hands.

As mentioned above be aware of a build up of hair spray and I also use a Hoover to clean around the area in a hair salon as I’ve had experience of stray hair under the finished window etching! I’ve done a few hair salons and I use a pressurised pump sprayer which can be purchased from a garden centre with an application fluid. I use a felt squeegee and also a rubber lipped window squeegee as a window cleaner would use which I use to initially lay the vinyl down then I go over it with my felt squeegee to push any extra moisture out.
It’s a fairly simple process just be sure to trim the edge back a few mm short to allow the edge to set and moisture to escapeGood luck

How complex is the cut?
I either spread the job out over two days (one day for fitting and one for going back to get the app tape off) or if the cut isn’t complicated I’d be tempted to fit a solid piece of etch and then stick on top and cut out by hand…
I hate fitting window film.

@ John Mackenzie: We haven’t confirmed the design as yet but I usually leave the app tape overnight so the vinyl gets a good grip onto the glass. Thank you for the info.
