    Hi!

I get a lot of people asking me how long wooden signs will last compared to dibond, foamex etc. I never really know what to say. I use far eastern exterior ply. 2 coats of primer undercoat (oil based) 2 coats of gloss. The gloss I use is International 10 year gloss. So I guess I should be able to say 10 years.

What do the rest of you reckon? Do you give a customer a guarantee?

Be interesting to hear your views.

    Hiya AJ,
I offer no guarantee on any products I sell. However I do expect my permanent signs to last 7 to 10 years. If I feel there are issues with the durability of my signs within a reasonable time period, I will fix it at no charge to the client.
I’ve been in the business for 14 years and I still have a couple vinyl lettered MDO signs out in the field from the first year I started. Although they do show some wear and tear, I still think they’re acceptable. My former employer has hand painted signs that are 25+ years old that still look great, but that was when paint was still good and Simpson Signal MDO was readily available.

I don’t give them a specific time such as 10yr, 15 yr etc

What I do say to the client is that it is common practise for shops or other businesses to freshen up their corporate image every four or five years and that quite often this involves new sign design and a fresh lick of paint to the premises……. and then quickly move onto another subject!

I’m confident of course that the sign will last for many, many years

Incidentally: That’s the format I use if a wooden sign!
