  • Will this Metamark MD5A wrap fail? And how to avoid / fix fail?

Posted by Pane Talev on June 20, 2019 at 8:02 pm

    Good evening all,

As per title, Will this Metamark MD5A wrap fail? And how to avoid / fix fail?

This is my personal vehicle and I didn’t want to waste my Arlon SLX roll.

I can see the vinyl popping out on a light recess just after few hours.

    Any suggestions welcomed.

    Cheers

if it’s already pulling out then I guess that’s a fair indicator.

Metamark MDX would’ve done it, not a whole lot more than the MD5A,

That’s not a waste of SLX… I like the design.

I doubt it will stay in place.

    Agreed David.
I’m sure a lot more will pop up. Just thinking of a way to fix it.

You did it as an example as to why your customers should pay for the right material [emoji6] [emoji6]

Not that I’ve used that excuse.

Wanted to spend my last roll of MD5A-will not use MetaScape again. I prefer normal MD5.

    Please take my comments constructively…

Metamark MD5 is the wrong vinyl choice for this job. i.e. It is Not a Wrapping Vinyl.
However, I would have to say that in those locations showing the fail, "the application method is wrong".

I say that for two reasons…

1, the vinyl, although the wrong choice. would cope with such a shallow gradual recess.
2, the vinyl should not be pulling back, as the vinyl really should have been fed in and out/over the recess rather than stretched into, which in turn causes the pullback as it shrinks under tension or because it is a calendered film.

With regards of how to avoid this fail as in your title? My reply kind of explains that… use the correct tool for the job with the correct application method.
Sorry, I know this sounds a bit brutal, but I hope it will save you time and money in future, as well as others reading.

    hope this helps mate…

If you’ve a straight eye you could run a scaple down the recess. You need to be careful not to destroy your paint though. That way rather than pop out your vinyl will shrink slightly leaving a thin white line. At least this way it won’t split open over time.

I wouldn’t save your premium wrap material for a customers vehicle Pane, it should be on your own van as an example of the very best work you can do.
Using a polymeric or hybrid film is just asking for trouble later on. The potential damage to your reputation far outweighs the price of a decent wrap film. You’ve put time into a good design, set the job up & put time & ink into it & really only saved a few pounds/euros. Have you done the whole van or just one side so far?

Good morning all and thank you for your comments so far. Perhaps I should have asked the question different.
In my workshop I only stock MD3, MD5 and Arlon SLX. Wrapping always with SLX.
I agree with you MD5 is not the vinyl to be used for this project.
Being my personal vehicle I did this job as a test and to spend my remaining roll of MD5A. T6 is pretty flat van an the application was smooth. At a moment where vinyl is lifting and starts to look bad-I can remove wrap that very same day when noticed.

I have only 2 sides printed. I will do other side today.
    I’m not wrapping the bumpers.
I will wrap the back with Arlon SLX.

I will do a cut line as @David Stevenson suggests and hope that I will get 3 years from this wrap.

I will do a cut line as @David Stevenson suggests and hope that I will get 3 years from this wrap.

I would rip it all off & start again with the correct vinyl may cost you a bit but treat it as a learning experience 😆 😆

The potential damage this could do to your business is simply not worth the risk. anyone looking closely at the van will see it & if I were looking for someone to wrap a van for me something like that would sound warning bells, I wouldn’t even contact you so no chance for you to explain how or why this came about 😆 😆

I know that’s not the sort of thing you want to hear Pane sorry but t is very difficult to gain a good reputation & so easy to destroy one 😆 😆

As someone who is not in the mainstream sign making business, I agree. This is basically your ‘show and tell’ shopfront, and should be an exemplary example of your work and capabilities. Even if you explain to people, they may think you are ‘fobbing them off’ depending on the person and are unlikely to hang about (Unless you have the gift of the gab of course 😀 ).

Honestly, I thought, ok its small recess, let’s try MD5.

Second day and I don’t see this lasting as it is popping out on all small recess.

Doesn’t hurt to know the limits of the material you’re using Pane. You now have the experience of it failing without an angry customer banging on the door. It was a great design & install, should have the best material.
Time is the most valuable thing you’ve lost, the material is a round of drinks.

You could keep it on the vehicle and put writing on it to say ‘This is why you must pay for the right material’ on the other side print with the right material and basically use it as a sample vehicle. When customers think the cost is high and want cheaper material you walk them round to the van and show them why its not a good idea

I would like to update you on this one.

Although I was hoping this will take me trough my lease, it didn’t.

I had the van serviced at VW this week and they washed it with a strong jet. In the big recess where the MD5A popped out after few days, the strong jet teared the vinyl. (Also cold this week, around 0 degrees, so vinyl is brutal, hence the cracks)

I dont have close up photo, but imagine that all deep recess failed and are cracked at the moment and chunks of vinyl are missing.

So lesson learned. Will get re-wrapped soon in Metamark MDC. (Testing the MDC for the first time)

Also I would like to encourage forum members to give out an answer when they have one. That will make the forum a better place. Some questions are related to materials we all use. What goes around, comes around. With the same energy you get the same help fast. Also, the forum becomes a nice place. Just my two pence.

good to have an update on it, a shame the garage ruined the popped vinyl though.

Very true, Pane. Well said, mate…
I fully understand forums and the like are a quick fix solution to questions many of us have, myself included. but it’s good to see a follow-up post from the originator clarifying if whatever, worked out for them.

Thank you for the update Pane, and the latest photo, mate!

On a side note mate, I noticed the original post photos have broken links. do you have a copy of those by any chance and I will fix this or if you could upload the ones from before?

It is nice no to be able to visit the forum because of too much work. In the past 2 weeks has been crazy. Went on install today, van was waxed, so I came back home. Day off work.

Some of the fails are due to my mistake. I did not feed the vinyl properly. I was treating it as cast and used heat to push vinyl in. Some is due to the ability of MD5A.

    Time for a new wrap.

Having said this, I’m not a wrapper.

I officially don’t offer vehicle wrapping.
