  • why wont corel open a file for summa winplot please?

Posted by Hugh Potter on January 21, 2008 at 5:17 pm

similar prob to the thread over the weekend on the summa cutter secton…. 🙁

having spent the past two and a half days clearing up glass and re-organising the workshop, i now find that parts of the design i needed cut three days ago, won’t open in winplot!

it’s fine in corel 12, but when export (click the winplot plug-in), it opens as per normal, but with nothing to display, some things do open, others don’t.

i’ve redrawn the graphic twice, no different.

i’ve uninstalled and reinstalled both corel 12 and winplot / plug-in, but it’s still doing it.

any idea’s please ??? (other than use the big hammer which is sitting, temptingly, beside my desk)

Ensure EPS export is set to ‘Text to curves’ see if that makes any difference. If you send me the file I can try it from X3 if you like.

    Hi alan,

i did try to convert to curves, seemed to make no difference. these are actually graphics i’ve had to draw, rather than eps files from a disc etc, and i’ve never had to alter those settings before, i’ll try it, but am not certain it’ll cure it.

it can work on some parts i’ve drawn, yet show blank (no cut path when i tried to cut "to see what happened") on others. when i say others, i’m talking individual bits of a design from the same file, not different files. eg… one umbrella was drawn, i then made 6 copies at various sizes, only 3 would show up to cut, when i deleted the duds, and copied the working bits, they all cut. but this has not worked for another section of the file.

corel keep then coming up with the ARM recovery thing, and shutting down. as has windows when i’m searching for files.

i’m beginning to wonder if it’s the laptop playing again, i’m 2 days off of a downloaded anti virus prog expiring, about time it played up so i buy it!

i had similar the problem was parts of the drawing were on a different layer. how the hell they got there i dont know
select parts that didn’t cut and see if the info bar at the btm of the corel screen says layer2. all should be layer 1

    hi Chris,

i’m not sure i can see the ‘layer’ mentioned.

what i did find unusual is that it has two pages, i opened a few random designs, large and small, and they all have only one page.

tried a few things before A.R.M closed it down!

have tried right click>order>to front, on all the parts i’m having bother with, but to no avail,

if i try to do anything, A.R.M shuts down again!

why does stuff like this only ever happen when you need it most? grrr.

Export your file as CMX, import that, save and try again. CMX is essentially the same as CDR but with no styles and styles sometimes get corrupted so essentially you are cleaning these out. At sometime I would also save your workspace (if customised) and then relaunch Draw with F8 pressed, accept the factory default workspace then reload your customised one.

To view layers etc. have the object manager docker open at all times and you can easily drag objects to various layers and change the layer properties. I use layer 1 as my cutting/printing layer but stuff imported from SL comes in as Layer #1 a different layer having the docker open helps me keep track.
Docker found under the windows – docker tap

thank you Alan, i’ll try that, was just about to get stuck in again!

customising my wrkspace only involved adding cmyk alongside the rgb colour palet, so not i’m happy with the default… actually, it will be on default since i reloaded yesterday.

    cheers.

ps, why do these things always happen when i’m in the workshop and out of range of the wireless??? lol!

Palettes won’t get saved anyway. It is worth exploring the workspace because tools you use regularly can be added to it, I can’t remember if the Winplot button stays or not with F8 it does if you’ve saved it though. Customising bar is easy goto tools – customization – customization – commands – choose the category and then from the dropdown just drag the icon onto your top bar. Remember these will be lost with an F8 restart unless you have saved/exported your workspace.

cheers Alan, Chris has got me half way there on this prob, but when something says objects on desktop, or master desktop
as opposed to layer 1, is there a way to move them back to layer 1 ?

    cheers.

Yes Hugh open the object manager docker and drag onto layer 1. The icons you see on the top of this docker allow you to view everything on that layer with its properties (right icon) so you can select any dodgy stuff and move it or delete. With layers you can also make them non printing/locked/viewable. When I set up cards the card perimeter I put on layer 2 – its printable for the customer to proof and not printable when it goes to press artwork, a simple example.

i don’t think i’ve ever come across it before Chris, or can’t think of a time…..

    yes i can! just remembered..

sometimes when i import a ready made eps file, it won’t go ‘infront of’ anything, i can’t do much with it, and it’s always hidden, often thought deleted until i cut and it appear in the cut!

must be to do with layers. it’s been a long time since i’ve used simple clip art to be honest, but next time i need to, i’ll check it out.

I have the object manager docker open at all times. Another example, when digitizing/drawing on screen using a bitmap as your template, add a layer (rename it if you want) place bitmap on that layer and lock it, ensure layer 1 is working layer (double click it) draw as normal and you won’t accidentally pick up the bitmap when editing.
Remember you can drag a layer to a different order position and this helps with ordering when putting an object behind or in front of another if they are on different layers.
Layers have so many uses and are well worth exploring.
