  • why is my Roland cutter making an awful noise please?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on January 13, 2006 at 1:40 pm

Turned it on to cut out a large job, and instead of singing to me it’s making the most painfully loud noise-sounds like it’s going to die noisily!

Still cutting correctly, I’ve slowed down the speed, cutting pressure same as yesterday.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Is there a volume control button, or is it dying?

    Lorraine-

I would shut the unit off for about 5 minutes and then restart it. I wouln’t attempt to use it if it continues to make the noise – if it’s a fan for example the unit could overheat. Is it making the noice only when it cuts? or all the time when it’s powered on?

Thinking….definitely needs to be seen to. These things can so easily get worse.

It sounds as though the part that makes a noise has just got MUCH louder, almost as though the loudspeaker has started to go in a stereo unit, if you know what I mean?

Not sure about this, but could it be something jamming your rollers? Does it go through the normal set up OK or is it from the moment you switch on? It is hard to know because there are several possibilities? Sorry can’t be more helpful, have 2 Rolands myself and odd things happen on them from time to time!

mine started to get noisiy abouty a year ago..it makes a horrible DRY sound to it. worse when i first turn it on, gets better arfter she warms up a bit.( like most girls).

Does this mean there’s something wrong with my Roland cutters?

    They’re not noisy at all!!

Emailed Roland on Saturday, waiting on their reply. Mines always played a tune, but now its ear-splitting (screaming banshee-like!) 😥

My CX24 keeps changing the speed settings…….and when I slow it right down it still zips the vinyl up & down with the rollers, super-fast. It’s actually quite scary! 👿

Lorraine, mine also does that, CX24 and it won’t slow down even if you set it up in SignLab to slow down! It is quite noisy but not too bad, but the only screeching I’ve had was with the roller getting jammed once – very bad noise but OK when freed up.

    Hi

Our Graphtec plotter started increasing in noise level and this was due to two reasons
    1) the cutter mat becoming worn. Replaced this and this helped
    2) Dust, glue and gunk builds up on the pinch rollers – cleaned this also

    everythings seems aok now

    Hope it helps

    Lorraine,

It sounds like you have the initial feed set fast and the speed for cutting at something slower.

If you have a poke about in your settings you might find how to adjust them, although whether you do it on the cutter or on the driving software I can’t say as I’m not familiar with your kit.

We can adjust both and have the initial feed permanently set very slow so that if there is a problem with vinyl alignment we don’t get a big heap of ruined material wrapped around the cutter head. We then simply adjust the cutting speed to whatever is appropriate for the material, intricacy of the job, newness of the blade etc etc.

I’ve never until this past week ever had to change any of the settings, except the ‘force’, and these problems occurred all on there own, since it started making a noise.

I replaced the cutting strip this month, I’ve got new rollers but havent replaced them yet. Geoff gave the fan & base a good hoover/brush out on Saturday, which has improved the noise a bit, so I shall have to look at the ‘feed’ rate, if I can find where it is.

Surprisingly, it is still cutting OK, just scary!

I’m probably being a bit of a wuss, but I’m dreading having it stop completely, just when money’s tight, saving up for the shop move, re-fit etc…. 😥

    Lorraine-
You haven’t heard back from roland yet, have you? Screechy noises are scary, because they always seem like they are expensive! Lubrication is cheap but you have to know where to lubricate. jams can be cleared, but they can damge those fiddly little sensors, wires, and director plates. Ugh. A good hoovering was probably the smartest first step. One other thing to check. Do you notice any odors, like something hot that shouldn’t be?

    Hi Stephen

No, as expected, I haven’t heard from Roland.

The cutter seems to have improved, its not AS noisy, and I had changed a setting from heavy to light, which I found was the cause of it running too fast, now normal speed again.

I am keeping my fingers crossed, I have a few large jobs to cut this week…..

BTW, there is no smell or heat from the cutter. I wonder if the running track needs oiling????

    Thanks

    Lorraine
