  • why is my laser engraving material catching alight?

Posted by Caroline McHugh on July 4, 2006 at 10:00 am

Hi, I have been in the engraving business for approx 15yrs. I have just purchased an IL 100 Gravograph using Gravostyle 5. I am finding that material which is acrylic and supposed to support laser engraving is catching alight. I am not getting the support I need from the local agent. can anyone help out with some suggestions for settings re power and speed for matrix cutting of acrylic. I have used Gravostyle 98 for the last few years and am just learning how to use the new program so I might post a few questions. 🙁

Caroline, I’m not familiar with your machine but does it have an air blower near the laser site, if it does are you using it? without this the material will catch on fire.

Caroline on my old machine there was an air hose which pointed down onto the job where the laser hit, this could be turned on and off separately from a valve. This blew air directly onto the job cooling it in the process.

Peter is on about air assist, but not all machines use it. Give us a few more details, laser wattage – thickness of material – settings you are using to cut & are you removing surface film.
