Here is one for the computer guys, just got a virus infected computer from someone, and thought I would reload windows so I could disinfect it. It wont even let me load windows, stops at 34mins to go while loading devices.

    Any ideas please.

    Windows XP?
re-loading windows hmm.. unplug everything like usb devices etc.
if doing the option where your trying to fix windows xp with a windows xp startup cd, then you are basically just re-writing the files and registry… however reloading windows like that will not fix a virus/spyware.

Thing is… have you got a backup DaveB… if you hit the wrong options on the Windows Setup CD it will format you computer!!!!

That’s not a problem Dave as there is nothing to save on the computer.

Trying to get XP professional back on, and use as a backup computer.

    Thanks guys

Are you telling windows to reformat the hard drive?

if your formatting.. should be no issue… hmm
sounds like your problem is faulty hardware somewhere, maybe a network card or something along those lines.

the reason why you started this issue in the first place and maybe not a virus. Maybe just spyware which is not an issue

i would suggest you take out any unnecessary components eg sound card modem etc. then reformat the disk by changing the boot sequence to cdrom first (that is if you already haven’t done it). if there is a problem that will help you isolate it 😀

i would cut out all the bother and put a new HD in as you are guaranteed nothing left over. and they dont cost much these days.

Do a clean instal format to ntfs and don’t use the quick method either and shouldn’t be a problem

If all else fails, I’ve got a large sledge hammer if you want to borrow it. Only used once on windows 98.

I don’t have any on my computer, and it is less than a year old. If you manage to get it reloaded, the first place you should visit is microsoft.com. There is a malicious software removal tool there.

you know when you computer says “Windows has updates to install” or when you put in SP2 for Windows XP… well these are the files that windows keeps so that if you dont like the SP2 or the updated computer, you can go back to the previous setup when you use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel
