  • why does summa D60 have a bad tracking problem?

    Hi,
I have a d60, always worked fine, very pleased with it etc etc.
Today though i tried to run through 3m of vinyl for some stripes on a campervan. I hadnt cut the stripes, I just ran 3m through the cutter at cut speed to check the amount of vinyl. It came through the machine off the roll just fine, laid well on the floor nicely below the cutter as usual, but when it pulled it back through the cutter it keeps going off to one side.so it ends up rolling out back over the top of the media flanges at the back causing it to crease then jam. Luckily i managed to stop it from jamming just in time, and have done again and again, trying to get it to go.
I used different rolls of vinyls, all have same problem. Anyone help me??? I have 3 or 4 jobs i need to cut and send or do 2moro and Im not sure I going to be able to.

    hello matt

when we have had this sort of problem it has been because the rear tracking rollers, the ones you rest your media on are in different slots, check that they are in the same slot both sides, hope this sorts your problem.

this may sound stoopid, but check the pinch rollers are lined up with the grit roller beneath, it only has to be slightly off to one side for it to throw it out,

    Matt,
check what Alan has said, also clean pinch rollers and grit rollers. I’ve had a similar problem with my 5 year D60, i removed pinch rollers cleaned with meths, cleaned grit roller & reassembled. I also replaced the cut strip because although it did not have a groove worn into it the plush had worn off it where the vinyl travels over it. (suggestion was courtesy of Harry at Edward Mathias) and bingo tracking again. What you can also find that if you haven’t got a catch basket fitted grit gets oicked up off the floor and can embed it the pinch roller.

    Hope this helps

Tried all these things guys, havent changed the way i load my vinyl since istarted. Still running off on the return run. I have missed two days work because of this now, im getting slightly annoyed, 🙂 I have rung suppliers, they rang distributors, they werent helpful. didnt ring back twice. So i chased again, might get something done about it next week. more money lost. I wondered if it was the vinyl, as when it on end it looks like its cut wider towards the outer of the roll. Its from a newish batch of vinyl and i have tried a few from that batch, all same thing. But older stuff still does it, but not as much. But if it was the vinyl getting wider, it would show both ways through the cutter, and also it wouldnt go off to one side ie wider one side and shorter the other. Pullng my hair out now.

on my old graphtec the pinch roller bearings had slight side to side movement which gave poor tracking new ones cured it.

    Matt,
just a thought, have you checked that the allen key grub screw adjusters are both in place on each of the pinch roller assemblies. If one of these come loose or fall out it will cause the pinch roller to run with more pressure on one edge. These don’t normally come out but i have known it to happen.
