why does my magnetic signs have curling edges?
Posted by Aaron & Chris on June 2, 2005 at 1:14 pmHi Everyone
Have an order for some mags for vehicles that are 600mm wide by 200mm high and its the 0.85 stuff. Weve cut them to size but because its off a roll the pieces roll back up on themselves.
Just wanted too know if they will finally lie flat. Also what do you find is best to cut the mag and also round the edges off. 😕
Cheers
Chris 😀

The curl will subside depending on how they are stored. I tell people to keep them flat when not in use, like on the side of their fridge. I cut mags using a scalpel and a straight edge, it takes a couple of passes but gives a good cut. WATCH THOSE FINGERS! Round the corners with scissors.

Put them in the sun for about ten minutes while on a flat surface. Or if it’s not nice and sunny give thema bit of heat from a hair dryer or heat gun on low setting.

No ones ever asked us for mags then we get an order for a load. Dont want these things flying off down the M60!! 😀

If I supply two mags of the same size I stick them back to back and they stay flat.

I do the same as Big G, use a 10 pence to draw rounded corners, then cut them with a pair of scissors. It stops the corners lifting apparently and they look a whole lot better.

No you don’t Dew. You don’t even have 10 pences up there. You probably use a ha’penny or a farthing!
I always pass on the usual care instructions for magnetics – keep them clean etc. 9 times out of 10 when I see them later they are filthy and cracked where they have been slung in the back of the van and squashed.

I’ve done quite a few magnetic panels for Berlingo vans in recent weeks – I just cut them with regualr scissors against a paper template that matches the panel recess.
I think there is a market for someone selling magnetic sheet to sign makers that is pre-cut to exactly fit the panel recesses of different vans? It wasn’t hard it’s just fiddly and takes up valuable time.

Hello Macky
nice idea but I don’t think many sign makers would buy them as i’m sure most buy magnetic on a roll that makes it that much cheaper and don’t mind the extra time it takes to make them fit just my thoughts 😀

John
(stick mine on the side of the fridge and I recommend the customers do that as well. Only one customer objected saying he couldn’t drive his fridge down the motorway)

yes John they do when you cut them right but macky d was suggesting buying them panel sized unless I missunderstood (?) I also put mine on the side of the fridge till customer collects them it’s the biggest flattest metal surface I have radiators don’t work well 😛

horror of all horrors, when i was an apprentice back in the 80’s
i was serving my time at a pretty big name signs company at the time, upon seeing how one of the lads was shaping the magnetics to fit the panels of a toyota van i was literally a gasp.
He got a craftknife out and proceeded to cut the shape of the mag to the panel, directly on the van no less.
The signs firm are no longer in business, and hopefully that lad is no longer in the sign industry, with tricks like that who needs them.
