  • why does my computer keep re-booting?

Posted by Phill Fenton on January 28, 2008 at 1:10 pm

I am having a problem with my PC re-booting first thing in the morning shortly after it has first been switched on. It happened last week on a couple of mornings – and again this morning when it started re-booting itself shortly after I had first switched on. In fact it even re-booted halfway through a re-boot it was that bad.

I switched it off – checked all the connections – then switched it back on again and so far today it’s been ok.

I had something similar a year or two ago (with the same PC) and changed the power supply unit which cured it back then. I’m assuming it’s not being caused by overheating because it’s happening first thing in the morning. The rest of the day it seems fine until the next day again.

Could it be the power unit failing again or is there something else I need to check?

power lead at back of PSU a little loose?

I think Nicola means the heat sink past you put on the processor to heat sink, not sure if this will fix it as it only dose it fist thing, maybe don’t turn it off 😕

    It’s not an e-machine

It runs on windows 98 – It is quite an old machine but runs my old Casmate Design and cutting.

Can you give me some indication of how hard you want me to bash the case Dave? (e.g on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is a light tap and 10 is mangle the case with a sledge hammer :-?)

Check the mains plug is not half out and look inside the plug to check the brass screws are tight.
Could be that moving something else is causing an intermittent connection to the PC.
Check the mains plug in the back of the PC is in tight.
Check PS cables are on properly, especially to the motherboard.
Check your network cable connection (if any).
Check the keyboard plug is not loose.

Maybe a loose wire in the plug mate. It’s happened to me before.

I’d doubt it’s the heat sink if it’s happening first time you switch it on ……… not had a chance to over heat!!!!!

Yeah, loose wire somewhere or go for a number 10!

Thanks for all the advice – It’s been okay all day today (apart from first thing this morning, I’ll see if it happens again tomorrow morning. Meanwhile I’ll check all the obvious things first (Loose wiring as suggested)

I would work from the socket out Phill.

    Try a new power cord.
Check how the power cord seat into the socket in the PC back.
Leave the PC plugged in but not on ( to earth it)
Open the case and give it a good blow out if there is any dust.
Hoover any crap from the PSU vents.
I would pull apart any connections and re seat them, power cables memory, interface cards etc etc.

Does your monitor link from the PC? Some old ones use too, if it does try running a power cable direct. It may be the PSU is shutting down under load.

Also just had a thought can the case be knocked easily? Just I have seen before burning in the connector when the mains leads goes in from arching where a connector wasn’t a tight fit. The burning then caused a poor connection.

    after that the hammer…

    Tim.

    i suggest first multiple blows of a 3 phill…

if the machine goes off quickly, you have found the problem.
