  • why does importing eps. & ai. files look invisible?

Posted by Clive Darbon on November 8, 2005 at 12:59 pm

    Hi All

Don’t know if this is something that others have come across, but my filters in SignLab seem to be acting real weird. This, by the way, appears to be a hit and miss problem but now seems to be getting worse. Basically, SignLab imports or exports .eps or ai files and they are ‘invisible’! They are actually there but they can’t be seen. Now you may ask ‘how do you know they are there, when you can’t see them’? Simply by the fact that I have been able to plot them. Also when I’ve sent them to other users they have been able to open them ie a user of Adobe Illustrator?

So does anyone have any ideas what’s going on here? And is there a solution? It is a real pain, simply because I want to resize the graphics and I can’t see them to do it! Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem importing into corel and signwizard, some files exported from Adobe in ai or eps.

Both programs import them, but they are blank pages. Be interested in this answer too.

I can open them in adobe tho, no problems

Thanks Shane, my Adobe owning friends seem to be able to open them as well?

My Signlab 7 is the same, but I import into Corel 11 then export as EPS ans they open as normal in Signlab, strange 😕

Mmmm, that’s happened to me before too……! But I also get another problem sometimes with ai or eps files going into Signlab. They look perfect and when selected with all the nodes showing, they still look perfect. But plot them and they come through with vertical cut lines on them?
Anyone shed some light on this problem too?

Thanks Dave, I have heard this said about using Corel to do the export/import before. Does anyone know the best place to purchase Corel from these days, haven’t seen it about much recently?

I’ll throw a curve ball here.

I can import them into corel 12 at work and it will work sometimes, and export them as an eps and they may work.

But my corel version 12 at home never imports them 👿 , no matter what I do. I’ve even tried crying to no avail 😳

I have had this too and have come to the conclusion that an eps with fonts may have something to do with it and also colour model on exporting programme. From Corel it seems that some colours, normally Pantone spot automatically go to black or white, white obviously being invisible on a white background. Less problem here with 7.1 but font substitution sometimes crashes.
Marcella – construction lines from Corel, on export from Corel Draw (AI) ensure ‘simulate complex filled curves’ is unchecked on export.

Shane, start your Draw programme with F8 pressed and then accept the default workspace when promted, try importing problem again.

    quote Alan Drury:

Thanks Alan, it is nearly midnight here so I’ll try this tomorrow

    cheers

Thanks Alan! I haven’t got a clue when it comes to Corel Draw, as many will have already noticed!!!!!! But that could be the simple answer to a very annoying problem!!! 😀

Spookysign – I bought my Corel on Amazon – seemed best price and their service is excellent. Check out the upgrade paths on the Corel website – you can upgrade if, for example, you have rival software such as Illustrator etc.

Shane, if Alans’s suggestion doesn’t work, try to import as Postscript Interpreted rather than EPS – may give you the paths. I dont know signlab but on some software you have to export as an earlier version to get it to export in a version that can then be imported.

Marcella, one other suggestion, you could try making sure everything is ungrouped before exporting.

    Thanks guys.

Martin – had tried that before but didn’t help.

Just tried what Alan suggested… it worked on one file that had that problem. Thanks!

    Hi spookysign.
I do most of the import filters here at cadlink
I would like to ask you to email me the eps or ai file involved.
But email addresses are not allowed on this board.
I also cant reply to PMs here as i am considered a merchant.

If you could somehow send an email to cadlink, say to tech or sales, with your email address, and ask that it be forwarded to frank , i could then have a look at the file and see what is going on. I could probably email you a new import filter if you are on a reasonably current version.

Shane, forgot to mention if you have customised your workspace make sure you export it first, that way you can reimport it after F8

    FAO: Frank @ Cadlink

Really would appreciate some help on this Frank. Now I also think that the export/import problem has something to do with text and not pictures. As I successfully exported an ai file as a picture then imported it back again, with no problem. Then tried to do file containing text and it failed to work?

I am happy for you to send me an email so I can upload a file to you rather than sending it via tech support. I hope that I am not breaking the board rules by putting my email on here – I’m very sorry if I am, but this problem is starting to depress me.

I may be stating the obvious but when you import to signlab collapse all layers shows missing eps .ai etc etc.

    Hi,
Have had similar problems with signlab.
Sometimes with AI files I have found that if I click the show fill I can then see the outline. then ungroup and remove the white square that seems to cover them. also some times right click on a dark colour in the colour palet and something may appear.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers
    Ian
