  • why do i keep getting a dongle Error for Signlab 7.1?

Posted by Stephanie Peterson on March 3, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Okay I have yet again another problem with Signlab this time it has to do with the Dongle. I have phoned their Tech support about two hours ago but they still have not gotten back to me so just until then I want to see if any of you can shed some light on what might be happening and how to correct the problem.

Anyway we have some construction going on in my printing area needless to say lots of things are being moved around and shifted. However when they moved the tower for my computer to on top of my desk I can no longer print using signlab. I can use signlab no problem but when I go to print and cut I get this: Dongle Error. Dongle not found or not valid. We did not unplug the Dongle in the first place. The only things that got disconnected was the Summa Plotter and our Summa DC3. Other then that nothing has really been touched or moved wire wise.

I tried pulling out the dongle and putting it back in and then restarting the computer but that had no effect. Anyway if you know why this is happening and how to fix it that would be fantastic.

We have Signlab 7.1 and we have a parallel dongle.

    Thanks, Stephanie

Dongles do occasionally fail. Static electricity can wipe the dongles memory. Sounds to me like you may need to get your dongle re-programmed or replaced. Hopefully they can email you a reprogramming utility for the dongle which can save you time waiting for a replacement otherwise.

have you changed from parallel to usb/ firewire for your printer?

I think later versions need a usb dongle but cant shed any light on why things have changed for you, did they plug the printers back into the same plugs as they came from? the parallell dongle is a through device and normally the printer would be plugged into the dongle.

    Hi Steph,
I use to use Signlab with a parallel dongle and every so often got a dongle error message. You may find the card inside the P.C has dislodged
when moving it. If the problem is static you may find it needs replacing.

Thanks Phill, Peter and Karl for the quick replies and information.

I’m not sure if we changed from parallel to usb/firewire for our DC3. Yes we hooked the plugs back to the exact ones they were in before. Our printer was never plugged into our dongle since I started anyway.

Steph, go to manage printers, in print and cut manager, and make sure the port Drop down tab)is set to the "physical port" that your printer is set to

may not help but I have had this before, signlab sometimes has a mind of its own, and for no apparent reason gets confused.

edited to remove image as it was a bit wide

I would do that to check for you Peter but I cannot open the Print and Cut Manager. When I try and open it I get that Dongle Error message and then it closes and won’t let me touch or adjust anything. Here is a screen shot of what it looks like when I try to open the Print and Cut manager.

And then if I hit the more button this is what it looks like.

After that it just closes and whatever Signlab I had open and trying to print freezes.

Steph, I dont understand why you are getting the path to a beta version?
Signlab usually has all the options and demos in one program group, where are you firing up the print and cut Manager from? can you open it direct from something like
    "C:\CADlink\Print Cut Manager\PSQueue.exe"

I tried opening it directly from Signlab and from the start menu. I tried going in and opening it from "C:\CADlink\Print Cut Manager\PSQueue.exe" but I still get the same error message.

Ever since I worked on this computer I have used Signlab Beta, because whenever we set it too Signlab 7.1 our Invisible Program opens up instead.

Just an update cadlink finally got back to me this morning and it turns out that the version of Print and Cut that we have only works with a usb dongle. Which is odd since for the last six months print and cut worked just fine with our parallel dongle. Anyway we need a usb dongle now in order to do work but I thought I would just post what happened and the outcome just in case some one else runs into this.

Also I want to thank cadlink for their help in the matter and thanks to Peter, Phill and Karl for their help here.

We just upgraded to version 8 from 7.1 and had the same problem with the parallel dongle Cadlink sent use a new usb dongle for free – when it arrived we had the same problem in opening vpm (print and cut) -PHIL from cadlink accessed our machine and fixed problem being the license file in wrong directory
This now opens the print and cut manager – but haven’t had time to play yet

Colin, I am convinced the last conversation I had with you was the correct folder to put your license files in? you will get me in trouble for not doing my job! :lol1:
