  • why do i get the error "cannot open port"?

Posted by Micheal Donnellan on May 26, 2006 at 9:09 pm

    Hello newguy with a problem.
I have a creation Pcut CT 1200 and I normally use WinPCSIGN Letter 2005 (came with the cutter) this works and I have no problem with it. I decided to buy Flexisign Apprentice for the Pcut as it seemed a better more advanced program. I install the software and hardware key, got hardware to work after updating drivers. But the problem is the blasted "cannot open port" error which means software is as good as useless.

I have a 3ghz intel pc with windows XP home edition SP2. I am using a usb cable to connect the ct1200 cutter with FIDI USB Serial Converter drivers, my settings are for com 3, 9600 baud, 8 bit, no parity, stop bits 1 and flow control none. I am driven round the bend with this problem as anything on the net is for serial ports and not USB.

Sorry for the long rambling post just trying to explain my problem. Can anyone help me?

hi mate… im not sure i have the right machine here mate…
i am guessing, but is this one of the cutters/machine grafityp offer?
if so, you may want to speak to nigel pugh of grafityp as he is one of the sites official tech supports on this type of machine… http://www.grafityp.co.uk/
only other cutters i think i maybe getting mixed up with is some sold on ebay… if this is the case. (it is NOT this guy) but… he does sell same machines and offers very good after sales support on this kit. maybe worth a call… Alan Flynn http://www.flynnsigns.co.uk/

Have you tried installing a new usb port through device manager?

    Hi,

I have Flexisign 7.5 Pro and had a problem in that I could not get the preview (i.e. of what to cut) screen to show – with port error problems, so not sure if exact same problem as you. I spoke to Granthams and it turned out to be a problem with the firewall I was using (they did explain why this affected it even though I wasn’t using a network, but went a bit over my head).

In short, test it with your firewall software off – if that solves the problem you could add the programme to the list of safe programmes in your firewall software.

    good luck.

I have tried it with Firewall off and no joy. Production manager still cannot talk to my cutter for some reason, despite all the com setting in setup being the same as in device manager. Its the Flexisign P-Cut Apprentice I am having problems with as WinPCSIGN Letter 2005 works and cuts fine. sent emails to Alan Flynn and software supplier no replies so far from them. I was hoping some one else might have experience with this software and cutter and if they had a similar problem. Its annoying as the flexisign seems to be a good program I just can’t cut with it.

    Hi,

What port do you have selected in the setup for your cutter in flexi sign, com1 , usb etc…
Is it a usb cable or a usb to serial convertor you have connected?

    cheers

Port selected is COM 3 in Flexisign P-Cut Apprentice which is a USB Serial port in device manager.
USB Cable from computer to a USB port into side of cutter.
The USB to Serial Converter is installed as part of the cutter.
The cutter is USB based using a FIDI USB Serial Converter built into the cutter, I have no serial ports on my computer as it is a new one.
Is this information any help to you?

There was a problem with flexi and production manager and firewall’s
Make sure TCP/IP is NOT selected in preferences.
Others have said that you need to instal the firewall after flexi
The TCP/IP works and also clear preferences if all else fails.
Do a search for flexi help one of the sites is SBK or SKB in America something like that lot of help on there.

    Antonio,

I seemed to have similar problems in the past – as mentioned above I have Flexi 7.5 – and a Summa cut. Once in a while I have to reload my drivers for the plotter for some reason (if simply turning plotter and flexi off and restarting doesn’t work). Maybe just my set up.

Now I turn on the plotter and it didn’t go. I start it by diferent ways and I think that it works ok when:
    1.- Turn on the laptop
2.- plug the usb to laptop
    3.- Turn on the plotter.

If I plug the usb with the plotter on, appears this message: "unknow device"

I get similar problems myself, some to do with the USB controller on the PC. I switch on machine to cut don’t recognise machine so I switch plug out the USB cable from the machine and PC usually go and make a noise (USB disconnected noise). Then reconnect and wait for the USB reconnected noise, then I hit reset on the machine and check if connected by using the spool function, this send signal to the cutter but wont cut any thing wrong which is annoying and its fast. If this does not work try it again, it usually will reconnect. just make sure in device manager and system hardware that it is connecting to com 3 as that’s the highest port I remember flexi accepting. and hit the reset button if reconnecting noise happens and spool don’t do anything then one you have set up the cutting limits and pressed the reset button so it reloads with these settings you should be able to cut away.

main thing is the USB Auto Detection on the PC don’t always work for some reason probable as the machine is connected via a adaptor rather than a pure USB connection.
