  • why do i get error when trying to install fonts?

    Posted by David Arch on November 29, 2006 at 8:37 pm

    I have Signlab E6 andit has just decided that it doesnt want to have any fonts in it.

    Everything else works fine but when I try inputting text there are no fonts installed.

    When I try to install fonts I get the following error and cant seem to solve it

    "The font database (CDLFONT.MDB)could not be found or could not be opened with write access. Please check the settings in your FONTMGR.INI"

    Anyone know what I need to check or change? All the fonts are still installed on the system and if I open an existing file it finds the right fonts and I can then use that font but none of the others are there.

    I’m pulling my hair out

    Thanks in advance

    Archie

    Hello,

    Sounds like the font database has got out of whack.

    Go to File -> Install -> Fonts
    Click on Reset Font Database

    You’ll then need to re-install your fonts (they’ll still be there) by selecting the appropriate types (VEF, TTF, etc) and clicking Search Now, then Install All

    Hope this helps

    Thanks for the suggestion but the error message comes up before the font installation window pops up so I cant even get that far…

    Have you looked to see if the CDLFONT.MDB file is there? On my system, it’s located in CADLink/Signlab e6/Fonts

    Try doing a search – if it finds it, right-click to check the properties – ‘read only’ & ‘hidden’ should be unchecked

    Thanks for that, no its not there, any ideas where it could have gone or how to go about replacing it?

    check your security settings on that folder and the signlab folder. Make sure that you add "Everyone" for read/write access. If you arent going to add "Everyone" just add the login account you are using and make sure it has Admin access. I know a few of the security updates microsoft had released recently played around with alot of the default settings and alot of peoples systems are doing what ever they feel like.

    It looks like the .mdb file is created at install time, so I would guess you’ll need to re-install Signlab

    Search for CDLFONT.MDB on your harddrive.
    It should be in
    eg c:\something\signlabxxx\fonts\

    Then search for FONTMGR.INI
    It should be in
    eg c:\something\signlabxxx\

    Double click on FONTMGR.INI to edit the file in NotePad.
    At or near the top you should see
    [Database]
    Path= somthing\something\fonts\cdlfont.mdb
    Make sure the path is correct
    it should be
    Path=c:\something\signlabxxx\fonts\cdlfont.mdb
    =========================

    Search for CDLFONT.MDB.
    Right click on it to get to properties.
    In the General TAB make sure there is NO checkmark in READ ONLY

    Search for FONTMGR.INI
    If it doesnt exist, create a NEW file in Notepad.
    add the lines
    [Database]
    Path= somthing\something\fonts\cdlfont.mdb

    Make sure the path is correct as described above.
    Save the file as FONTMGR.ini and save it in your Signlab directory.
