  • why am i getting this outlook express problem?

Posted by Harry Cleary on September 27, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Its me again!!!! 😮 computer problems!!! not sign related.

I have a number of Id’s in Outlook Express and all of a sudden one of them hangs when I try to log on……..the others are working but this one (my main one) just freezes. In 10 yrs of using Outlook I have never had a problem……Im tearing my hair out, while I can use the web to read mail, I cant access emails stored there or use the address book.
    Anybody got any ideas?

    thanks for reading

Any indication of the problem in the error report?

    Time-out / logon failure / send failure…

You could temporarily take it out of the ‘send receive’* cycle and forward it from your web server to one of the other addresses. Then check that your mail server hasn’t altered it’s protocols…or is just having an off day (it happens!)

    * uncheck "include this account in send receive" TOOLS / ACCOUNTS / PROPERTIES

have you deleted the account then re entered your mail settings, if you know them smtp pop3 settings etc.
I had that once deleting the account and making a new one did the trick.
If you have emails you need to back up search for .dbx files, this contains all your inbox, outbox, drafts etc.
    they will be hidden files
    They should be C:\Documents and Settings\youname\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxxxxx and a few numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.

there you will see all your saved emails, deleted emails, outbox drafts etc, save those then delete your account and re create.

Dont thank me just send cash to the usual address

Steve…….computer numptie here!……….I tried to reveal hidden files by checking the box but I cant see .dbx files. Am I doing something wrong?
Cash and the usual pics?? 😀 😀

Andrew, Im running the newest version and I can’t figure out how to uninstall Outlook, its not in ‘add and delete programs’……what is driving me crazy is the fact that the other ID’s are working…………….and the second bottle of a very cheeky red!!! 😳 😳

A couple of extra ideas for you. If you have lots of attachments in your mailbox for that ID, this can cause it to crash. If it will open after a few attempts, compacting the mailbox may help. I found that MS say Outlook can hold up to 4 gigs, but in practice it usually starts falling over once it tops 3 or 3.

Download Thunderbird (think it’s from Mozilla) which is a very good free alternative to Outlook and then try importing into that.

Get hold of Entourage, as I don’t think you can put two Outlooks on your comp without it causing problems. Then try importing into that.

If your mailbox for that ID is corrupted, there’s an app which may repair it. Its called Entouraid and is made by Ah Seow Sortware. Think its shareware but if offered for a free trial first.

Good luck – I’ve been thru hell myself with MS mail apps and now use Apple Mail on my Mac.

There really is no point in uninstalling outlook or trying to find a newer version as if you do regular windows updates and use windows XP you will have the latest version anyway, it seems you have a corrupted account or data related to that account, ok just follow the path to your dbx files as I laid out above, like this, make sure you go tools, >>>folder options, >>>view, >>>file types, >>> show hidden files, check the box and you will see the folder you have to click on. follow that path and you will find your email settings to back up, delete the account, then re make it.

    C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{xxxxxxxxxx and a few numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook Express.
Copy and paste the whole folder into another in case deleting the account deletes those files, that way you save all your address book and emails etc.

Lads, thanks a million for the help, you have no idea how much time I have spent today trying to solve this. I am now going to take Andrews advice and re-evaluate in the morning. I am hopeful that one of your suggestions will work! If only I can rescue and use the address book Im back in business. Thanks again!

are all your accounts using the same pop3 settings
for instance are they all pop.bt.com or pop.orange.co.uk etc etc, or are they different as in one of each,
if its just one accout playing up it may be that the mail server that routes your mail is down.

Marcella! I’m sober now and I’m still panicking!!! Anyway Nik finished the bottle!!!….and she knows nothing about computers! Good dancer though 😀 😀

You dont need to get into outlook to access identity details, your isp will have your pop3 and smtp settings ontheir website.
other than that you only have to remember your user name & passwords.
Ther really is no other fix needed other than back up your emails and reinstall outlook express, or a windows repair if needed.
The DBX files are hidden files so you need to allow them to be viewed in folder options.

yeah, I suggested a windows repair
Harry if you go into Accessories, then System Tools, then Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, then itemise Outlook Express files and you can back up all your settings without opening the actual program. And try a windows repair!

well i normally suggest system restore where i can…. i had the identies lockup thing in outlook express about 5years ago.

surely the addresses are stored as a file as a .wab in Windows Steve?

i use full outlook now, grey icons are better then blue.

The address book will be yes , but all his inbox, outbox deleted items etc are in the hidden folder I mentioned above.
I said address book in same sentence but it is located in a diff folder.
