  • White Windowed Beetle?

Posted by Martin C on February 6, 2003 at 1:10 am

I was overtaken today by a Lime Green and White VW Beetle with promotional graphics for TIC TAC’s all over it. Completely tasteless but very striking……….!!

The upper body (white) was complimented with white, very opaque window tinting. So white that from the next lane over you could barely see the difference from traditional vinyl!

I may be mistaken but it looked like the front Windscreen was white as well!!??

I know you can get Dark Tints but would this be a special or is white readily available? And is it legal to do the Front Windscreen??

    Any ideas anyone??

It’s like a mesh stuff thats used to cover windows on vehicle wraps. Works like net curtain. You can see out but hard to see in.

Martin, as John says it is white on one side and normally a darker colour on the back, full of tiny holes and this makes it possible to print a full colour image on one side but from the other side you can see through it. It is used quite a lot on the back windows of buses and on the side windows but I have never seen it on a windscreen before and would have thought this was illegal. Although you can see through the film it does reduce/impair visibility to an extent.

    Hi Guys

If It was Contravision which I doubt he would have a hell of a time whenit rains as the holes will hold the water and even if he uses wipers he would have next to no vision unless they do a white sticky side and it was on the inside.
Martin I cant remeber the exact facts but you are allowed to tint the front windows so long as thier is a set percentage of light allowed in Ihave seen a window totaly blacked out ecept for a letterbox shape on the drivers side how legal that is i dont know but very dodgy I would have thought…Cheers

Dont know about England Bob but in Scotland there is no legislation covering how dark the windows can be, so in theory you could do the windscreen with hospital black.
There is suppose to be legislation comming out about this in the future but I dont know when. This info comes from someone I know that specialises in window films both for vehicles and buildings. Although you can make the windows as dark as you like they will not install a film darker than a certain percentage to the windscreen or front windows as Ian says it is unsafe. He has turned work away because the customer wanted to dark a film and wasnt prepared to have a lighter film on the front windows and windscreen.

    hi ….

if you sat next to the window at lights i think you would know it was contravision as you can see the teabag effect of the vinyl.. perforated i mean.. millions of tiny holes… but very effective none the less.
we have the stuff on the rear window of one of our vans… works brill but like bob said does hold little pockets of water in the holes when it rains heavy & not to mention dirt 😕 … ill be doing a demo on how to make your own version of this stuff when i find the time… 😆 😆 😆 untill then if you cant find a supplier i will be selling it in the uksg online shop.. 😉 “little sales pitch there, need to get into the arthur daily image now this things opening” 😆 😆
now with regards to the white tint.. yes this is available i did 10no. 12 foot x 4 foot windows for a art gallery a few months back in the stuff… from a distance you cant see through it but right up close you can see through it just… i reckon the stuff martin is talking about is the same thing but not as dense, this way you can see throungh when driving… well maybe 😕 😆

I had to produce a similar effect for a London cafe recently….just cut a load of stripes 2mm wide and weeded every other one…customer was very happy. It’s also a lot cheaper than buying in the perf vinyl….the reason I cut it , by the way, was the customer wanted it to be orange and I could only find the perf vinyl in white.
    Cheers
