  • Which one is better at tracing corel vs illustrator?

Probably entering dangerous territory for asking this. But which is best.

Corel draw X3 or Adobe illustrator CS 2

Which one is better at tracing is the main question I am hoping to get answered, as manual tracing is slooow!

Any points/bugs I should be aware of?

The trace facility in X3 is a vast improvement over cd12 and I find myself actually using the feature now. Can’t speak for CS2, have copy but still only starting to learn the ropes.

The Tracing in X3 is a definite improvement over previous versions, I have compared it to Signlab and I would say it is well on par with that now. X3 does not have centre line trace so if that is important then your decision is made, as a signmaker you may never need it any way and there has been so much discussion on the Corel NG that I wouldn’t be surprised to see it added in future versions.
I have’nt seen Illustrator’s trace so can’t comment but it is generally said by users that Corel is easier and more intuitive to use and it can do multipage/imposition which Illustrator can’t. Importing pdf files with fonts embedded but not on your system will import ok for cutting (not editable text) can Illustrator do that?
Just look at the price though Corel Suite compared with the CS suite, I have been quoted as saying I could make my living using X3 – and I although I do use SL as well X3 is indispensible here.
Download the trials of both and make your own mind up, I don’t think you will be dissapointed with X3 and for the price, a bargain.
If there are specific funtions you need to know about I’m sure there are users of both here who can comment.

Got to be honest – I’m a CorelDraw x3 fan myself. I have used both & both have their strengths, but for signmaking x3 imho is the easier to use & get to grips with. It’s what you come to know & prefere, I used CorelDraw before Illustrator others may be just the opposite. I can speed through jobs with Sign Wizard but SignLab seems slow & long winded. Horses for courses……one man’s meat etc. 😀

Well got hold of Adobe illustrator CS 2 and the live trace is lovely to mess with though I put some files I traced through it and my output manually is better, more minor details which the trace cant detect, not to mention the "flow" of the image. Mind you I am not complaining too much as got it cheap now to try and get a cheap version of x3 like I spotted on the boards. then I can find out what all the praise is about.
