  • which one do i use serial/parrallel to usb for cx24?

It always happens on a Monday. I bought a new computer, loaded software for the SP540 and CX24, got the SP working (after some telephone calls!), and then found there was nowhere to plug in the existing cable of the CX24 on the new PC…..

The CX has got both Parallel and Serial ports. I downloaded the correct driver from the roland site ( for Windows XP), installed it on the LPT1 (printer) port, checked all settings on the driver are correct etc. It simply does not do anything….. ( I tried both hairline and .001mm outlines. No joy. Plotter is selected as default printer. Tried both LPT and COM ports….

    A few questions:

    a) On all previous Roland cutters I used, it was always connected via the parallel port. This one was connected to the serial port. What is the difference?

b)I had a look around to capture the port etc. Did not work.

    c) The serial cable I used is a short little thing that came with a Roland Stika I still have from way back when there was more time than work. It should be wired OK if it came with another roland plotter?

    d) The local computer shop told me they would get a serial – usb adapter for me by 11h00 tomorrow. According to the pimpleface who attended my queries, this will "change my plotter into a usb device" Can it really be that simple? I dont trust this lad, since he could not tell me what the difference between serial and parallel port is. A PC technician who does both hardware and software support should know, no? ( His response was to scratch his head, and then he said: Serial is old. I think parallel is older…..USB has hot it’s own power.)

Give me strength! I’m getting old before my time….

PS. Why does the SP 540V use a LAN cable and not USB like the old SP300? It all seems so much easier with usb connections!

I recently found out new computer mother boards still have parallel interface strips fitted, just not wired to the chassis frame with a plug. Might be worth investigating this as all you will need is the ribbon cable out of your old machine.

    Hi Gert

Just from memory LPT is a parallel port outlet so your serial port settings won’t makwe a difference.

I have cx24 connected to a parallel (LPT) port and you don’t need any settings.

If you are using a serial connection look for a com 1 or com 2 output and make your settings in there.

Hope that helps or jogs someone with more knowledge to answer your question.

Check on the cutter that the I/O setting is set to the correct type ie parallel or serial. I think it has an auto setting also. It may be set at serial so not communicating when your using the parallel connection.
