  • which magnets do you use for holding vinyl?

    Hey guys,

We all know that magnets are the best way of hanging your wrap vinyl to a vehicle for placement. I know that Avery has those really (really) expensive magnets that I think were about $70 each(?) I feinted when I got told the price, so can’t remember when 😉

Anyway what we use here are fish tank cleaning magnets. They’re really strong, and they have a nice soft non scratching coating. They’re easy to hold and work a treat. The bonus is that they’re about $30 for a pair.

Great advice Lee. Did a wrap today and said to dad I wish I had some more Magnets, but I’m not happy about paying a fortune for them. Not sure they are $70 a pr tho, thought they were around $45 a pr?

Like I said Drew…I fell over which for me is really unusual especially when it’s to do with spending money 😉

I really like my fish ones. They work a treat.

Pretty sure we should be getting magnets for free with the amount of material we use 😛

    Hi all,

I had the same problem. The prices for the magnets were just stupid, so I came up with this, and it works great. The handle is a cheap plastic one for mounting rubber stamps on (I have a laser so we had them in the shop), but with some imagination, you could use anything.
The magnet is for badges so you don’t damage the garments with pin holes. They are very strong and most suppliers sell different magnet strengths.

I put them together with some cable ties.

You can cover the magnet with some felt if you wish.

All in all it costs a couple of pounds and works a treat.

I use the jag ones as well, I have found another use for them,
one of my customers wanted to fix a banner to his van temporally
to advertise when it was parked up,
Unscrew the handles and they fit nicely through a 12 mm eyelet and screw back onto the magnet

If you want good free magnets, take an old dead hard drive apart, the ones in there are VERY strong.

I have about 6 pairs of the JAG gripper type and i swear by them, very very strong grip but also kind to the surface of vehicles i also use smaller ones for address text etc on doors which work a treat which dare i say it i bought off fleabay.

The Jag ones, ive seen me use two on nearly a 3m section by 700mm and they have held with out any problems at all… I would highly recommend them to any company within the industry.

Also bought a pair from Cherwell but I would say that I was given 1 Avery magnet on my wrapping course, they are very expensive but the one Avery magnet is stronger than the 2 from Cherwell put together.

The strong magnets to look for are "Neodymium" based. If you are worried about them damaging paintwork, just face them with vinyl. :lol1:

got mine from Spandex, similar as the Jag ones. Don’t really use much for holding graphics but use for hanging scissors and making tape on

Amari do them. I bought 3 sets of 2 last week. They charge £10 a set. Very strong and sound for the job. I’m gonna save a fortune on masking tape now. 😉

I use magnets from Staples (Stationery Supply people) about £3.00 for 12
The plastic surround is about 35mm although the actual magnet is about 8mm, doesn’t sound much but they are strong and fine for fixing lettering to vans prior to final fixing. I use them all the time
