  • which is the best-XP or XP PRO?

    Hi all,

Gonna get XP today, not sure whether to stick to XP or upgrade to Pro, as this is for work. Is there much difference? Is Pro better for businesses, and why?

Bearing in mind that I got on well with Win ’98, not so well with XP, I wondered if XP Pro is going to take another 6 months to find my way around.

    Cheers!

    Hi Lorraine,

I use a combination of both pro and home, and to be perfectly honest, for the average user it doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference.

The only real advantage pro has over home is that it has a web server built in so you can do local testing of web pages with active content and to host local intranets (both network very well).

If you have computer parts supplier near you try and buy an OEM version of XP that comes with a piece of hardware… such as this

    Hope this helps,
    Mark

    Thanks Nik, Mark.

What does OEM mean? (Sorry, this probably really shows how naive I am)

Its for sale to people who build computers but now it seems that you can actually buy it

Difference no fancy freebies to pay for no frills brown box probably
    and CHEAPER!

Did you try the registry clean You have nothing to lose try that then if that doesn’t work buy XP Home you dont need the bells an whistles for XP Pro its designed for networks more security etc etc .

But do a clean install of the operating system for instruction here
bit long winded but print it out and use during installation.

I dont know how much partitions you have but just use 1 for now if you need more get software that does it for you or your m8 the computer guy.

Delete all others during the install and use the whole disk for a partition.

There are many sites telling you how to clean instal XP read these first to familiarise your self with it if you aren’t happy

This one gives you pictures of the process

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

save it as a file ie File save as and in the pop up box under save as type select WEB ARCHIVE the save it
The next time you click on it it opens as a web page on your computer.

If you using Windows 98 then I suspect you will have a fast computer at the moment… if you use a upgrade/new/OEM version of Windows XP Home/Pro then computer will go pretty slow… need about 256Mb of memory to be effective and a large sized hard drive.

My advise is to see a local computer tech, one that is reconmended by someone. Goops OEM method maybe favourable but you may find that you cannot use it on your computer as it is too slow.. so that means changing parts which will be against the OEM license and you will be stuffed. See a Tech or buy a cheap PC from Dell.

Windows XP Pro, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Media Centre and Windows 2000 all use the same internal methods to do things, they are just packaged differently. XP Home is geared towards the home user, less networking/internet features and Pro has them. I would go with Home if you have no plans to have 2-3 computers working together.

Also, look over your Sign software, make sure it is XP capable.

    Hi Dave & Goop

I am using XP home, bought it pre-loaded, now need disk to re-load. A mate has dropped one off at home for me to borrow, can use my licence number, hopefully up & running later on. Will use that site you recommend Goop, thanks very much. I’ll let you know how I get on.

    Hi Lorraine,

Here’s a warning – if you have a network that is running a domain, DO NOT get XP home as you cannot join it to a domain. My advice would be to go for pro anyway as it is far more configurable than XP home and these days not much more expensive.

If you want any more help then please feel free to ask 🙂

    Cheers,

    Chris
