which design do you think has the correct shadow effect?
OK I have a boat name to do with a shadow, the name is in an arch (not my scene).
I have produced a shadow in signlab (using shadow tool) but because the text is on an arc, the shadow is produced as if the sun is shining from the top right, so the amount of shadow under the text varies. That is OK in reality but to the eye seems wrong. I produced a shadow as normal then used Transform tool to bend the text in an arc, this keeps the same amount of shadow but distorts the text. So I resorted to producing the shadow as normal, then arching the text then placing the shadow original shadow onto each letter.
You can see the results attached, which is the correct way, which looks best etc etc.

I think John is right, there is no right or wrong, its whatever looks the most appealing. I like the middle one 😀

Middle one for my eye, the NA looks skewed in the bottom one.

I’m inclined to prefer the middle one.
I think it’s because it appears (to me) to be more a 3-D effect rather than an actual shadow.

Middle one for me too. To do this in Signlab I put the shadow onto straight text and then use ‘fit to circle’ and adjust start and end points and then inside centre point to alter distortion. EasySign users have a fit object to arc tool which does the same thing but slightly more straight forward to use.

I used to find this a useful bit of software for this sort of thing.
Haven’t used it for a long time though because we’re waiting for a Max OSX version.

I would say middle looks right
all the verticals follow (or appear to) the same radius.
You need to rotate it a bit so the base line is the same for the start and end letterPeter

FWIW, I like the top one best. I think it stands out better and looks more nautical 😀

its probably a trick on the eye but the top text looks a tad bolder. 😕
anyway… i think i prefer the shadow on the the second because it is consistent and to joe bloggs they will be looking at it in this way as opposed to whats actually correct.
based on whats correct, would be the top one because the light is directed from the top right onto arc’d text. so the shadow on the lower right of the letters would be more shaded than the lower of the letters on the left as they are more exposed to the lights direction, but the left of these same letters are now less exposed than the lower right so the shadow increases in depth.
. if that makes sense?i’m not keen on the bottom text at all… text looks all skew’d into the arc…
