  • where do i buy a mac and is it easy to upgrade?

Not being that familiar with mac’s, can anyone tell me how I find out the spec of a machine, in particular the memory size, and how easy is it to increase the memory?

    Thanks,

    Chris.

    Chris,
Why do you want to become familiar? Is there a special reason?

    Hi Peter.

We just picked up a G4 imac as part payment on a job, we had an old G3 that we used just for taking in Mac files and saving to PC which the power supply went on and not worth repairing.

How come PC manufacturers can’t make PCs as sexy looking as Macs??

    Chris.

P.S. Thanks Andrew, will try that tomorrow when I get into work.

Like Andrew says, go to the apple menu – about this Mac, at top left and tell us what it says there.

Early G4 iMacs came with OS9 so you could have either, but the procedure is the same. OSX has a blue Apple and OS9 has a stripy Apple.

I’m surprised that you have a bad G3. They are normally ultra reliable.

    Hi John,

It came with the latest version operating system (Tiger is it?) a px at the local Apple Reseller, should be plenty good enough for what we want.

Just that trying to put Adobe CS2 on, it said that there was not enough memory, needed 384mb minimum.

As for the G3, always faith full till one day the power supply just went bang, and not economical to repair (or so I’m told)!

    Hi Chris.

i don’t know for sure, but I would guess that it probably only came with 256Mb, although you never know for sure because the vast majority of computers get upgraded before they are bought.

That’s probably Apple’s biggest failure – not enough memory as standard.

    Thanks John,

So do I need to take it back to get the memory upgraded, or can I do it myself?

What size memory would you recommend?

have to agree with you there john….i put in an extra stick of ram nto a b3…and boy what a difference it made, i noticed more speed gained from memory upgrade on a mac than i have done on a pc 😀

i might be wrong.. but g3 and g4 might use the same power supply as a pc. most other g3 & g4 parts are pc parts.
    i could be wrong.

    Chris,

I can’t remember the number or configuration of the memory slots but you need 512 Mb minimum although I would go for something nearer 1gig because, like Nik says, the performance gain will be worth it.

Also I have never owned a G4 iMac so I don’t know how easy it to get inside one. I would be inclined to let the dealer do it unless it is obvious.
