  • where can i store cut vinyl before applying?

Posted by Matt Hards on April 3, 2006 at 5:46 pm

I have a problem, I have a LWB sprinter to vinyl, The design covers a large area of the van and is built up in sections. I travelled to do the job for a friend, I have done one side, but because the person didn’t turn up until late, It didn’t lave me enough time to finish the other side. So now i have about 15m of vinyl cut and has application tape on. I use clear tearable medium tack. But it is starting to go wrinkly now already. But because of logistical problems and events we cannot meet up for 3 weeks now until i can finish the other side. So should i bin the vinyl or is there and ingenious way of storing it to stop it being ruined, at the moment i have halved the lengths, put a cardboard tube in the premises roof and then hung the graphics from the ceiling in my workshop. Please Help!!! 🙂

I’d store indoors, warm, dry & flat. Rolled up will almost certainly guarantee you a few wrinkles, especially if it’s a bit cold & damp.

If it does go creased and you don’t want to scrap the vinyl – it is possible with a bit of patience to take off the application tape….don’t fancy it much though. Then you can store the cut vinyl rolled loosely.

Yep. As said above. I fit metamark for a national based company. And have the "kits" sent by courier.

The vinyl is taped with std tack. Resulting in tunneling, where the kit is rolled up. This causes a complete nightmare for fitting in cold conditions.

So my advice is to store flat and room temp if you have the space mate.

If i send kits out I tape them with conform high tack. Top stuff. Never had a problem yet.

Hope you dont have to bin the vinyl. Money and time down the pan! 👿

if you’re using the clear tape, and it tunnels, the only way around it is to slit the tunnels, but not the vinyl underneath, then ‘patch’ the slits,

in my experience, with it being the clear (ie, waterproof) tape, you’ll be unlikely to be able to remove it easily, if at all,

i only use clear now on a few layering jobs done inhouse, as opposed to on site, the problem i found was that the clear tape stretches, or can stretch as it is pulled off the roll or laid on the decal and squeegied down, then in a short period of time, it can shirnk back to size, causing tunneling,

the only way i got around it, until i discovered that a decent paper app tape was better, was to pull of the desired amount, and let it sag in order to ‘lay’ rather than ‘apply’ the tape onto the decal from the end nearest the roll, then only gently firm it down,

    not an easy one !

Ok thanks guys, well being hung from the ceiling from one end will keep it flat of sorts, but unfortunately it does get cold at night, ill have to keep as best as i can and hope its ok, prob go to ruined in the last week just before i need it. 🙁

As to Hugh`s comments, do most people tend to use a paper application tape rather than a clear plastic one. Can u still see easily where you are positioning, ive always used the clear since i started, i need a new role this week, so should i try something else?

Just my experience but save the clear for either white text or very tiny text otherwise i always use Conform paper tape, best i have found so far.

I only use conform clear for layered applications, otherwise I use paper for everything else. More forgiving in cold weather too.

Rub it in shane!!!! 14deg C in south wales today.

Matt. I,ve never bothered to use clear.

Try making some registration marks/crosses or a solid line at the bottom of all your colours.

Have read through previous threads. I’m sure they’ll help you.

Sorry to be a pain but can I just clarify with you guys that the best way to send out graphics for customers to fit themselves would be to use a paper application tape rather than a clear?

I recentley has a problem with some vinyl that I had cut, weeded and applied clear application tape to and then left in a room (room temperature) overnight, to be fitted in the morning only to find that in the morning that the application tape had bubbled and come away from the vinyl in places.

What is the best way to send out vinyl for customers fitting?

    Thanks

Russell, there is Clear app tape and the is clear app tape.

Personally the only clear I use is the Conform brand.

Having said that, I’d be using high tack paper app tape and you’ll have no problems at all. I send all my signs out using it, never had a drama.
