Posted by Terry Bull on July 16, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I have been asked to stickup an estate car to look like a surfers woodie

Is there a printed wood effect vinyl available that would be suitable or is it a case for printing etc
    cheers

i would print and a nice deep gloss laminate.
istock have some nice pics to get you started and inlay some darker wood as lettering or design, done a few carpenter signs like that.

We’ve used some from these people before. We usually apply them to flat parts for signs though. Not sure how well they would do on a car. You might be able to get a sample from them or ask them.

Thanks Dave i have seen similar materials in B&Q but don’t think they would be man enough for a vehicle ,Simon what you suggest would be durable but may not conform to the shape
Unless a supplier stocks vinyl preprinted on the roll then I will have to go with
    your suggestion Chris

terry, have a look thru the portfolio section, i used some woodgrain effect (from Chris Dowd i think) to make part of the logo on the (do a search with) ‘A Feaver’ van, or even search woodgain and my name as authour in the file swap forum, the file is prob still there, might work for you. if it’s not there and you want it, pm me your email and i’ll try and send it over..

    cheers.

There are some Photoshop plugins for wood effects (Eye candy) – some can be quite realistic too.

I have tried Victory and they no longer stock it
I shall have a word with the customer and see how involved they want to get into this
Hes a street rodder who just wanted to trick up his daily driver so its not a
    major ‘to do’ project
Thanks for the help i will see where he wants to take this
Think he thought a bit of woody vinyl and a couple a pallets would have it sorted

3M Di-Noc film should work …..originally designed in US for the automotive market (sides of estate cars) now made in Japan by 3M primarily for the architectural market but some of the woodgrains are suitable for exterior use.

Its not cheap but certain patterns are available in the UK by the metre

If you want to look at the patterns google "3M Di-Noc" and take the link to the 3M UK and Ireland site – It also shows which can be used outside … not all the patterns on the website are available by the metre though.

Stuart is right! I couldn’t remember the name of the supplier, but we use that Japanese stuff too. It really is top notch stuff. The really cool thing about their vinyl is that they actually have some texture on the vinyl as well to mimic the wood grain a little better. Like Stuart said though, it is a bit expensive.
