Where can I get smooth Blackboard vinyl?
Posted by Paul Rollason on June 10, 2004 at 4:14 pmHi all
I ordered some blackboard vinyl from vinyl corp but it was not what I expected.
I expected it to be a smooth mat black like if you spreyed blackboard paint. What I recieved textured very similar to a vinyl I used in mold making to get a non skid surface.
Where can I get smooth Blackboard vinyl?

As far as I know paul, you can’t get a smooth vinyl for that application – the reason being that “Vinyl” by it’s make up is a fairly soft material and chalk needs to have a slightly abrasive surface to kind of sand it away as you write. Vinyl of a smoothish texture would mark/wear out too easily so they make it exagerated kind of sand paper textured so it will last.
I may be wrong but thats what my impression is anyhow !! I assume you read the previous numerous posts on this subject …..?sorry, not much help really I guess 😉

Thanks Nigel
I,m sure I’ve seen this less textured black board effect on signs in the past.
I will just have to keep phoneing suppliers and getting samples.
As soon as I find what I am looking for I will let you all know.
The quest continues.
I suppose I could spray Blackboard paint onto a masked off portion of the sign.

I had a sample of some blackboard vinyl from Hexis, and that was a little smooth. Still a stippley kind of texture, but smoothish 😕
Tried a couple of methods for blackboards now, and I’ve found spray on (as suggested by Chris at FluidEdge) works the best for me 😀 Really easy to apply as it just sprays on, and relatively cheap as well, about £2.50 a tin.

Cheers Dewi
I think that is the way to go
What with the vinyl I go costing £12.50 a metre an all 🙁
How well does it stick to vinyl, do you have to prepare the surface etc

I haven’t tried spraying it on vinyl yet to be honest, I’ll have a lash at that tomorrow 😀 I just spray it onto foamboard, then bright coloured or matt white vinyl on it in various designs.
I am trying out some Aboard designs at the moment, with blackboard inserts, so it’ll be put to the test as to whether its as hardwearing as the paint on version. I was told the blackboard vinyl can go shiny after a while, and it’d spoil the effect of the signs I’m making atm.
Also, Nigel (CreativeSigns) was discussing the merits of a thin laminate material coated for blackboards. Again, something I want to try out, but then I like trying everything and there are only so many hours in a day 😀
Cheers, Dewi
