Posted by Robert Lambie on May 4, 2004 at 10:13 pm

hi all, im after a little help here on windows XP Pro.
I recently had to upgrade some new parts on my computer. in doing so i decided to reformat & change from win98 to XP Pro… ok ok i know many will be saying.. about bloody time to mate 😳 😉
well, running the site and anything to do with it on this comp the last thing i wanted was a reformat, then to change to something i wasnt used to..

anyway anyway.. heres my question. i have now loaded 80% of my software & i would like to have my software desktop icons on my bar along the bottom of my screen next to start.
in win98 i would just drag and drop but this seems to forbid this?

    any ideas?

im guessing its a setting needing turned off or something but im chocka block in the backgrounds of the boards at the moment. 😕 😀

any help ide really appreciate. thanks!

if you want to customise the icons right click bottom tool bar click properties, then customise at the bottom, it lets you show what you want!!

    hope this helps 😀

yeh they are hid nik.. but those are active icons like my firwall, antivirus etc
what i mean is icons for closed programs so i can open them easy by one click on bar at bottom. same idea as when you minimise a program you click it to open. i normaly run 3-4 programs at one time while working so its handy to have the icons at the bottom. 😀

Try right clicking on the bottom tool bar, click “toolbars” then click “quick launch” … I think thats what you need??? 😀

Ideally you should have the minimum of tray icons. The reason – all these little fellows consume memory and slow the system down (all these little critters are short cuts to the bigger exe files).

Here’s how to speed things up a bit.

Click “start” and then “run”……. in the dialog box type “msconfig” and hit enter. When the grey panel loads, you should see the tabbed list across the top – the last one is the “startup”

Uncheck all the programmes that you dont use on a regular basis, ie real player, music stuff etc etc – the only one that really needs to be there is “systray”

WARNING : make sure you only uncheck the programme files your sure you know of.

    Hope this helps Rob

You get the option to pin them to the start menu instead Rob (above the line of your most commonly used programs Thats what it seems to me anyway.

Said it before trot long to a web site called Black Viper and read the stuff there very informative and tells you the way to switch off and more important what to NOT switch off with XP for a smoother running PC
