  • When did we go green?

    Hi Guys

Just got a regular client call me because he’s doing a film shoot of an institution based in 1990 time period. He raised an interesting question regarding the colour of fire signs. Of course at one time they were red and and white until the Euro thing. But when did we change to green?

not sure exactly when mate.. but has been some time.. not all green though. im sure the fire hazard/notice signs are still red & white and
signs like, “EXIT” “PUSH BAR TO OPEN” “MAN RUNNING RIGHT/LEFT” etc are all green back white graphics.
i do know they have done away with the text on fire direction signs and the like… basicaly all the signs should be able to be understood no matter the persons spoken language. everything should be in graphics.
i.e. instead of (fire exit >) it will be a man running, then an arrow, then a door… this is being introduced in many many areas of signage for health and safety.
another example is: we have been producing digital pictures of the right and wrong way to load a box of liquid fuels. they actualy get a guy dressed in the way he should be.. (workwear, gloves, boots etc) then he demonstrates how to load the box.) the signs do look good and must help lots.. but are exspensive to produce and for them to buy of course. but then again, whats the price of a sign if its going to save a life or more?

It seems that the green running man and door was introduced in 1990.
Hitherto for quite a few years it was just green with white text.

Still! Interesting to know just for the archives when red went out

Interesting aspect is that the symbol used.

Now anyone who has ever been involved in teaching fire safety, knows that key messages to be imparted in fire evacuation training include such things as:

    remaining calm
    walking not running

So what image do the magnificent EU authorities impart?

    👿

    Yep a running man.

    🙄

Ah well, there must be some other beneftits in being part of the EU, somewhere ………
