whats the rules when applying reflective to back of vehicle?
Posted by Robert Scullion on November 1, 2005 at 12:23 pmGot a customer wanting his vehicle done with reflective vinyl, 2 different shades of blue, Europoint only appear to supply one blue, can anyone advise on another supplier/make.
Is there any rules/regs regarding the fitting of reflective on the rear of a vehicle.
Thanks in advance
Bob

I think you’re OK putting blue on the back of a vehicle. I’d be surprised if you find another shade of blue, most reflectives come in a very limited range of colours. If you know anyone with a Gerber Edge you could get them to flood a translucent blue foil onto white reflective to create another shade. That works.

Avery sells many different shades of reflective….but I won’t buy it any more due to adhesion problems.
Andy has a good idea.

This has been on the boards recently but APS catalouge states :
The Road Vehicles Lighting Regs. 1989
Red MUST be used on the rear
Any colour used on the sides
Any colour, other than red can be used on the frontCheers

Those regs are, at least, incomplete. Yellow is definitely OK on the rear, for example. Reflective material follows the same rules as a lamp and is treated as such.

MacTac’s Maclite 5700 has 2 shades of blue. Light blue and dark blue, personally I can’t see a massive difference but perhaps you could ask them for a sample of each and get an idea…?

We recently bought reflective vinyl suitable for digital printing, we bought it from Tenants UK Ltd, I think it cost us £750 for a 46M 1320 roll.. Its a new product for them so they may sell you a part roll. It worked well, no problems and looked great.

Ryan,
How does it look when printed? I use tranparent foils in my gerber and the reflective quality shines through the colour, Is it the same with inkjet? or are the printed bits opaque?

£750 for the roll! My god that is on the pricey side.
Yes the reflective does show through on the sample that I have, which is from Tennants as well.
This is the LG digital reflective, I had thought about ringing for the price but I’ll not bother now 🙂Steve

Yes it printed fine, colours we’re quite vibey similar to standard white digital, we did a panel 6m x 4m and it was quite eyecatching when finished. Funnily enough Tenants asked me to send them a sample which I promised to do so happy to send you one to Peter if you drop me a line at (mod-edit)
It was expensive to buy but I think normal reflective vinyl is a pricey substrate so it did not come as too much of a shock. Client was happy to pay the cash so everyone was happy end of day! I also contacted All Print Supplies who distrubute LG products and their price was over £900 for the same roll so it does seem there are some price differences in the market, you might be able to get it cheaper still if shopping around.
