whats the best way to apply vinyl onto drum skins?
Posted by Craig Gibson on February 17, 2005 at 7:29 pmI have a local band who want their band name on the big drum head. Should the head be on the drum and tightened or can I apply the vinyl to the head before it is put on drum and tightened??

you want to do it when it’s off the drum. Try and cut some sort of template (we use a couple of sheets of cardboard) to fit inside the drum skin to give you something to lean on when squeegeeing the graphics on.

Most unusual question indeed!
Just a thought what vinyl will you be using?

I think Nik did some of these recently, there was a post on here somewhere.

just out of interest i have just done a couple of drum skins, and the guy who wanted graphics on them said that vinyl defened the ‘tone’ of the drum, so i had to use paint instead!! just wondered if anyone else came across the same problem!! 😀

Hi
I have never done this myself, but have a banding background. If its the bass drum you are refering to, you would need to put on when tight, or when the skin is stretched, well you would never line it up.
I would not recomm paint, as in time it is sure to come off.
If you dont plaster vinyl all over the skin, i cant see how you would “deaden” the sound too much.
Premier are one of the countries leading drum manufacturer, i would call them, they should know.

Call these guys, recomm by a pro friend, just supply artwork, they will print onto
What effect does the print have on the sound of the head?
We print onto single ply, 7mil Evans heads. When the print and protective layer is applied to the head the extra thickness makes the sound a little fuller, more like that of a double ply head.Custom Skins
