  • whats best way of matching banner colour to pantones?

I have to match a very pale blue off of a website to produce a panel of colour. I’ve looked through several brochures and proper Banner vinyl doesn’t seem to come in the right shade. Anyone know of a supplier or best way to achieve this?

Panel to be 600 deep x 1500 wide onto reinforced banner which wil then have vinyl lettering attached.

i made one in a bright purple last christmas. it was about 1m x 20 metres.
i basicaly inked the whole banner purple then applied the text.
just a small roller 6 inch wide small tin of ink (colour matched) thinners and ink the whole thing.. leave 24 hrs and apply text.

    Rob,

I assume you mean screenprint Ink? Where’s the best place to buy small quantities and how much, quantity wise, should I ask for??

Also, will it last as well as vinyl, or even better?

What about digitally printing the whole banner?

If you cant get it bang on it will be pretty close. Light blue is only a level of cyan so it shouldn’t be too much bother.

    Hi martin
Yes mate, screen print ink is what your after.
I use sericol ink & thinners, but from what I have read on the site, they charge more.
The other inks name slips me, but do a search im sure there are a few posts on this already. They state the inks name and contacts. I’m sure Lorraine mentioned a few.
I would buy as small a can as you can get.. The ink goes a long way due to it being mixed with thinners.

I would say the ink lasts far longer than banner vinyl would.

Digital printing the whole banner is another method, I agree. It Keeps your hands free as you just sub it in and a lot less messy.
Unless it was a solvent printer I would say it wouldn’t last as long as the screen inked blue but banners are temporary anyway.
Depending on the company you get to print it, I would imagine it being more expensive than the ink way also.

I can’t digitally print. I’ve gone in at silly money, sprat to catch a mackerel with 2 banners and a large T-shirt order and haven’t left enough margin to go for anything dearer. Also as the banner is predominantly black text, vinyl works out a lot cheaper and I can keep it all in house……………when I find some ink!! 😕

Why don’t you supply the banner in white complete with a spotlight covered in blue transparent film. This way he can shine the light on the banner and it will look light blue……. 😕 ….Just a thought …… 😳

    Martin,

I have only done this type of job a few times, but I used Cherwell 01280 840297 who did do Apollo Inks, I assume they still do. Cost about £20 per lit I think. Or think you can buy direct from Apollo http://www.apollocolours.co.uk/

p.s. make sure you get thinners too – the 1st time I did this I just got the ink and it was like rollering honey 😀

Hope this helps you a bit !

Thanks, £20 doesn’t sound too bad! Like the idea of the tinted spots and the glasses, unfortunately these banners will be rolled out at special events, slung up scaffolding, dragged across walls, all over the place and be seen by crowds of people. I could always try for the glasses franchise at the same time!! 😎

    Hi Martin.
This is what I do when I need a certain color banner.
First, I make sure that I order an enamel-receptive vinyl banner.
Then I lay it flat, dump some 1-Shot Lettering Enamel straight from the can in a puddle in the middle, then I roll it out carefully with a 9″ foam roller. Finish the edges carefully with a 1″ foam brush. If you get any bubbles, try to smooth them down with the foam brush. 1-Shot has great levelling properties and it comes in a bijillion colors.
Leave it dry at least a day or two, then it is ready for either hand-lettering or vinyl graphics. Sorry Rob, I apply those wet because the 1-Shot finish is absolutely unforgiving, and if you make a boo-boo and have to peel a letter off, you could peel the background off as well. But then again you could always touch it up with more paint.
    Good Luck! 😉
    Love-JILL
