  • whats best method of re-painting an aluminium fascia frame?

Posted by Peter Dee on April 30, 2008 at 8:43 am

I have to change the colour of an existing fascia frame (6m x 1.3m) from white to red. It’s a typical Panatrim type section.
What would be the best way?
    1/ Mask and brush paint.
    2/ Mask and aerosol paint.
One downside of using aerosol is getting the RAL 3020 but I could get a couple of cans made up locally.

Would you consider doing it with the panels in place or removed bearing in mind the extra time and risk of handling the 3 sections?

Make sure you key it well with a scotch pad (available in car body shops) and spray, I would take the panels out as masking would be a b****. I have used matt vinyl on these too, but it was a simple curved profile.

I’m just having Aluminium frame re-coloured at the moment. Local car body shop doing it in nice two pack. For ease I would remove for spraying.

Just remember to etch prime the ali first , ali would not rust but if not given the correct primer will scab up and make a white powder

Thanks for your comments. Rich, it’s already white so I will scurf it and apply some ESP then paint over.

Is it really worth all the aggro?

    Obviously best to remove it.
Take it back to your shop or a painters.
All the pre-paint then the paint work.
    Then back to fit.

Personally I would consider replacing it and get whatever I could for the scrap.

    Just my 2p’s worth.

    Tim.

Sorry ’bout that. Nice to see someone is paying attention… 😉

ESP is Easy Surface Prep available from most good paint stockists.
It looks a bit like white spirit and you can wipe it on to glass, previous shiny paint, plastic acrylic etc and then paint straight over it.
You can’t actually see it when it’s on but it etches in to the surface as a key.
    Bloomin’ good stuff.
I have used it many times on gloss foam board, wiped on ESP then rollered 2 coats of gloss straight on top.
    Never, ever peeled off.
    Just Google Easy Surface Prep.

    ACID #8
    Ready to Use Etch Primer
Description ACID #8 is a 1K ready to use etch primer available in
aerosol or 1 litre cans. It is used for priming bare metal
surfaces, this promotes adhesion of paint and
    prevents steel from rusting.
ACID #8 is chromate free. Typical applications are
over rub through areas prior to painting, on new bare
metal panels or over bare seams before sealant is
    applied.
    Surface preparation
    and instructions for
    use
ACID #8 can be applied to the following surfaces:-
    • Bare steel.
    • Aluminium.
    • Galvanized and Zinc coated steels.
    • Fully cured paint.
    • Polyester bodyfillers and G.R.P.

aluminium really needs and etch primer
