This is a strange one, I have been asked to design a logo and sign for a local shop. I asked the client to forward on to me any ideas he had, so he sent me a link to his web site. I have looked at this site, and see that he is advertising the fact that he does signage on vans, cars, shops, supplies printed t shirts banners,,,,,,,and runs a cleaning company, computer shop and does web design the list is endless.
My thing is, do I design this logo and layout, quote a price, then he knocks it back and uses my work and does it himself !!
The other thing is I do it but don’t get paid, but the most annoying thing of all is that he is setting up on my doorstep and doing most of the stuff that I am doing,,,other than web design, and cleaning..
Why would he want someone else to do the signage, when he states the fact he does signage ?

I would ask him outright, simple as that.

is he simply a middle man who intends to resell signage? if so, he really needs to supply the artwork.

is he simply trying to find out local competitors prices?

is he busy and moving into the area, no time to do his own sign?

no idea dude. I do admit that it sounds wierd but you’ll not kow unless you ask his intentions. just be open and explain that you’re confused as to why he, a sign supplier / maker, is requesting prices etc from you.

if you’re satisfied with the answer then it’s down to your judgement. I think i’d still ask for a 25% deposit to even begin work and supply artwork to my competition.

    Do what I do.
Tell him the logo will be $XX up front, paid in advance.
Then he will either run screaming into the night, or he will pay you the $XX to design his logo.
Whatever you do, don’t even turn on your computer without a deposit.
My gut instinct is that he is probably just trying to see what you charge for a logo design so that he can compare prices.
Either that or he is trying to screw you without the benefit of lubricant.
    Love….Jill

Thanks for the replies guys and girls, I did ask him why, and he told me that he is going to "sub contract" out the signage work, still I think he is up to no good, will be very cautious with this one

Why isn’t he subbing it to the person he will be subbing his sign work out to??? 😕

Well if it was me, I’d play the game and make freinds with him…… find out what he’s up to and then you know what your up against…. Easier to extract info out of someone your on good terms with!

Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer and all that!

If he is offering all these different services then it is possible that he is just a sales type person who subs it all out to various contacts he has. I have a customer that does something similar although he doesn’t include signage in the services he offers, he has passed my name directly to quite a few people however.

Problem I have with this is why is he advertising all these sign products if he doesn’t have someone to do the work for him already and if he does have someone why hasn’t he asked them to design a logo for his business.

Don’t think it would do any harm to find out a bit more as Mo has suggested but at the same time I don’t think I would be happy to do any work without a deposit of some sort. Does he have premises at all, if so a trip round to see him might give you a better Idea, you could always say you were passing and had popped in to get some ideas from him about the logo.

I sent this guy a mock up, to allow me to see exactly what he is looking for, and we have now gone from pricing a diabond sign to a banner and a lightbox,,,,,,Have not gave him prices as yet, Im going to see what is next, anything I have given him so far I have added a copyright statement too, warning him that these images belong to me and must not be altered or copied blah blah blah…Something tells me he is out fishing…

Sounds like he is using you to work out what he should charge for various types of signage.
Get someone you know to email him through his website and enquire about sign prices. Play him at his own game :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Why for heavens sake did you give him a mock up?
You may as well just shown up at his place with no pants.
    🙄
Do you think any copyright or warnings will mean diddly-squat to him?

Can anyone tell me were to get cheap Vaseline,,,,, 😳
I think a small bit of trust between me and him is required,,,only a small bit,the best copy right protection method is the nephew, big and well known in this area, if the chap uses the mock up, he will be in the sh…ooooops
he will be the one needing Vaseline.
Thanks for all your concerns, I have taken on board all, and will not be supplying him with signage.
Many of the local small shops in the area have been taken by these folks, and they seem to be opened one day a week and have bizarre names to go with them. I have been told that they are receiving Government grants to take shops on………..need I say more
    Thanks
