  • what way will i apply wording onto back of horse box?

Hi. As many of you know I’m fairly new to industry so bear with me…
I have been asked to do a horse box with a stripe down either side and HORSES on the back. The side of the box has lots of bolt heads in it. Assuming I cannot remove these, what’s the best way of doing the stripe?

Also, how would you do the HORSES on the back bearing in mind the location of the bars in the door?

One more thing – I’d be interested in seeing what you guys would charge for this job. I’ve rated it quite cheap as it’s for a friend and should be good practice. I’ll be using 3M Scotchcal 50. Just the flash down either side and the HORSES on the back.

    Thanks in advance!

Design the stripe so that it doesn’t go over the bolts!

What about HORSES much bigger and spaced H OR SE S

I think the design could do with an extra colour, possibly silver.
The yellow looks a bit "done on the cheap" on its own (sorry for the expression) 😉

As you’ve shown it here I would say not over £200 off the top of my head.

    Here’s one I did earlier.

Hi peter. Thanks for the reply. The customer chose the colour and 200 is exactly what I’m charging them! Problem is, they want it ‘done on the cheap’!! I did offer extra colours but they say that this was exactly what they’re looking for, and fits their budget. I did offer to space the letters on the back to fit into the bars but they said they’d prefer them cut around the bars rather than spaced, so I’m thinking the only option is to cut the middle section out of the R and put it on the bar, and put the rest of the lettering onto the panel.

Why not use a piece of dibond fastened to the uprights. I agree it needs another colour, wold look better with a bit of white.

If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is that the

    "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS WRONG"

I don’t think there is one job I have done over the last year
where I didn’t change the customers original brief, whether it be a colour or layout change to a total redesign of their logo, 99% of the time, once they are shown a half decent design/layout they go for it.
I don’t even look for extra design fees as maybe I should, and as many ad agencies would, I like to think of it as adding to a half decent portfolio to show potential clients, this in turn means most customers will have the confidence to let you use your ‘Artistic License’. Time making changes is kept to a minimum.
As I found starting out, customers expect a discount price & feel they are just a good a designer as you and so dictate the job which leads to a miserable experience throughout the job.
Now I dictate to them what will look right and have said to customers on occasion "That will look sh**te"

As other members have said, it needs another colour, I mean how classy is that yellow? Do they think cheap colour means cheap price? the best option for the rear is to use a Foamex board, this will let you lay down the vinyl at your own pace and will look 100% better, you will have a nightMARE trying to work around the bars. For the side, just cut up the stripes in whatever program you are using to manageable parts and to the max with of your plotter and cut.

At the end of the day you change your layout/colours, charge a little
extra, and everyone will be happy.

I am not in a position to turn my nose up at work but if a job is going to cause you more stress than its worth, forget about it.
After all you healths your wealth.

    Rant over.
