  • What was your first car?

Posted by John & Dawn Roddick on May 6, 2006 at 7:53 pm

I can’t find any pictures of my actual first car. but have attached picture of the same model. It is a Suzuki Whizzkid – mine was handpainted in white emulsion with a black bootlid. Unfortunately on old woman ran into me and wrote it off just weeks after I passed my driving test.

    What was your first?

😀 that’s truly awful Dawn!!!! I love the idea of the emulsion finish…. bet that had a great shine to it :lol1:

mine was a red Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6, an old ‘Y’ reg. I had it only a month then I changed it for a Vauxhall Carlton, A395HAD, I still remember the registration of that one 😀 I’ve never had a ‘wee’ car… need something substantial of my big butt! 😮

    Renault "sports" wagon.
    Nothing sport about it. 😀
I think I had the only Renault in California. I don’t think I have ever seen another one.

It wasn’t awful – it was a rear engined 970cc flying machine? I’d have one again in a minute – it would make me feel 18 again

John reckons if he could find one for me and get it looking good, it would be a great advert for the business. I’m sure he could, he’s quite a handy soul. He’s just finished restoring an old Vw. The car had been accident damaged in the rear. He repaired the damaged bit, replaced rust metal with new and resprayed the car. It’s a year older than me but it’s bodywork has lasted much better!

My first was a Ford Corsair pre reg, bought off a commercial artist I used to work along side, We worked in Charring Cross Road, so he parked in Battersea. The night I bought it and went to pick it up it had been nicked.

Bad Omen. It was found, I owned it for about 3 months for it to be stolen for good from a multi storey in Slough.

Moved up market to a Viva HB after that.

John had a left hand drive Mk1 Escort about 6 years ago, and told my mum that he had a stick with a cup glued onto it that he put his 60pence in, then poked through the window to pay the toll at the Erskine Bridge. It was ages before she realised it wasn’t true!!

I learnt to drive on a double cabin Kombi 2 ltr ute. I loved that vehicle.

We used it to transport rubbish in the cleaning business we owned at the time.

Never forget my very first date. A romantic evening in the double cab, until a cockroach walked over my dates leg, hands and hair.

My first date was my last date for some time. 🙁

My next 2 cars were Golfs.

Dad was an accredited VW salesman that could get a job anywhere in the world, and as a result we had VW’s in the garage from the Tear Drop kombi, Tear Drop ute, Type 3 fastback and Station wagons, Superbugs… you name it.

I restored a 67 beetle about five years ago, painted it monza red, lowered, blue printed the motor, leather trim with the VW motif embroided in the seat backs, burgundy carpet throughout, sports exhaust….

… I loved that car too. Business got tough and I had to sell it. The kid that bought it off me detsroyed it 2 weeks later in an accident.

All I had left to do was rebuild the gearbox and it was my plan to enter it in street drags.

I’ve had automatic beetles,a ’63 lowered beetle, automatic microbus, manual microbus, Kombi utes etc since…. now I am feeling all nostalgic 😕

My first car was a mini van – NSY 285.

I bought it for £20 but the starter had packed in. I bought a starter from a scrap yard but even though it spun the engine – the engine failed to start. I had to push start the van every time. I lived with the situation for about 3 months – periodicaly I would try and start it using the starter when one day I had left the van in first gear. On pushing the starter button the van jumped backwards – it was then I had a eureeka moment:

The starter I had fitted was spinning the motor backwards. Then I discovered my van was positive earth – newer minis had changed over to negative earth and the starter I had fitted was for a newer mini. A quick trip to the scrapyard to pick up an older starter motor cured the problem.

I hand painted the van yellow and orange using ordinary gloss paint. My next car was another mini (though not a van this time) which I also hand painted – this time black.

Brian – Steve Mcqueens Mustang or a night of passion with Shania Twain – Tough call 😕 But what on earth made you think of that :lol1: :lol1:

My first car was a Ford Cortina MK5 estate. Brought if for £60 a few months before my 17th and spent the summer doing it up and respraying it.

That was a great car. Also used to love my 74 Spitfire I got a year after the Cortina.

Moved from the Tincorner to a Capri (Call me Bodey, or was it Doyle).

Had a Maestro, Cavalier, Mundaneo and a couple of V6 Omegas since. I get bored easily, and now my insurance is reasonable I want, nay NEED more power. Har har har. 😉

My 1st car was my dads old Datsun 180 bluebird, old t reg. Engine was great but the bodywork fell apart. Bought a scrap mark 2 escort with the intention of doing it up, scrapped that 6 months later. Next was a mark 2 gold Capri with GOLD alloys bought for £100, went through a car wash and all the side bumpers fell off. I was that embarresed I drove off without picking them up. Even with its faults I loved my capri.
Traded that in for a brand spanking new Seat Ibiza, bad mistake, drove it off the forecourt and the speedo didn’t work. Had 3 years of trouble then traded the Ibiza in for a VW Jetta, (Golf with Boot). excellent car and did me for about 145,000 before the head went. Sold that and bought an Audi 80, best car I’ve ever owned. The wife still drives it now with 213,000 on the clock. I drive a vectra estate for work.

Dream car Audi or saab convertable. (has to fit wife and 2 kids in).

I know what you mean about the Ibiza John, I had one that didn’t work properly to. When you turned the key to switch the engine off nothing happened, had to stall it to get the engine to turn off, needed to have a new loom & wiring in the end. Expensive!! (especially when I was only a trainee in the sign business).

Shane – the letters indicate the year the car was registered. Y reg was 2001, H reg was 1990, K was 1991, L was 1992 and so on. After Y we changed to a more complicated system which I don’t understand anyway so could’nt explain it to anyone else 😕

My Van (NSY285) was built before the system of initials were introduced. I should have kept the number as it would have been quite valuable now.

Marcella’s right. Originally it was the first letter that indicated the year of registration. When they ran out of letters the system was repeated except it was the last letter that indicated the year. Now it’s even more complicated so no one has a clue and everyone buys private numbers anyway which further swells the coffers of her majesty’s government

    Personally I think the new system is easier to immediatly identify the cars age;

    02 March-Sept 2002
    54 Sept 04 – March 05

Then in 2010 they will change to 1 and 6 as prefixes.

Got on to ppq.com.au the other day to see what it would cost for my own ‘special’ plate, $2000 😮 got to be kidding. 🙁

My opposition got my plate tho. My business name ‘sign it’ was taken by a sign co near me that has a name nothing like it. He can have it tho for the money.

My first car was an end-of-life 1949 Ford which my old man gave me to learn to drive in a neighbouring farmer’s field when I was about eleven years old. Great fun.

Legally on the road was a Hillman Imp.

Illegally, and way before I turned seventeen, was my mum’s Cortina which I used to "borrow" on the nights she went out. 😳

    Ha what a memory quiz.

    Let’s see….

1st – Austin A40. Painted black with house paint with a Starsky and Hutch stripe in white. Eventually became a paddock basher with no wings at all – looked like something out of Mad Max. Great wee car. I can still remember the smell inside!

    Honda CB350
    Suzuki GS 250 Custom 😉
    Suzuki GS 550 Custom 😉 😉
Yamaha XT 500 – completely rebuilt with high comp pistons etc loved it to bits until some lowlife followed me home cut the 6 locks off it outside my flat in Edinburgh. Never ever forgiven him for that.
    VW Transporter – magic
Toyota Hilux Ute – wide wheels, big feck off roll bar, crappy 1600 engine!!!
Yamaha TDM 850 -Black of course. Only new vehicle I’ve ever bought. Absolutely fantastic bike. Went all over Europe a number of times.
Harley Davidson – FXRS 1340 SuperGlide – bought just north of Milwaukee and ridden around the outside of the USA and then back in to do a loop arouind the middle. Saw Harleys 90th aniversary and Sturgis in ’93. Would not swop that experience for anything – best thing I ever did.
Moved to Australia and bought a ’76 Kombi – It self cremated 🙁
    Mitsubishi station wagons.
    Mitsubishi V6 Magnash1te.
    Toyota Landcruiser.
    Mini Moke
    TDM 850
    XTZ750
    Mitsubishi Delica Chamonix
    WR450R
    and I’ve just bought a ’72 F100 straight 6 for $400 😀 The ‘project ute’ for work.
And to think, they said I’d have no memory left. 😀

    Good exercise, thanks.

    Simon.

    Let’s see….

1st – Austin A40. Painted black with house paint with a Starsky and Hutch stripe in white. Eventually became a paddock basher with no wings at all – looked like something out of Mad Max. Great wee car. I can still remember the smell inside!

I remember it too. I tried to steal it once in Edinburgh city centre. I managed to get inside and was going through my range of keys to try and start it but the smell put me off…. I stole a MK1 Capri instead that night 😕 😳

I might be a young one, but I love old cars! Hence the 3 classic Minis I’m restoring. No wonder I can’t afford a mortgage to give my Mum and Dad some peace!

Mine was a hillman imp , bought 30+ years ago (I was 16 didnt even have a liscence) for the princely sum of 5 quid (partially earned by playing father Xmas in a dept store selling lucky dips to kids " Tell your mummy she must buy you a lucky dip or Santa wont bring you a pressie" – nice job for a good jewish boy:)
It lasted for a year , my last year in school and was an amazing bird puller – but I suppose any wheels when one is 16 can pull birds. Used about 2 pints of oil a week due to a totally knackered engine and some 400 zillion oil leaks. I think the top speed was round 70 kph and if the incline was more than 2 degrees with a passenger about , one of us had to get out and push.
One day , upon coming out the cafe , I found it alight and it cost me more to have it removed than I paid for it. Remembered with fondness!!!

Good story Rodney! 😀 Sad thing is that those days are well gone, nowadays teenagers don’t want an old banger…. they all have illusions of shiny new cars with nice alloys and a doof doof mp3 player in it. But the advantage with a brand new car for them is that very often they can get a years free insurance with it, we all know how hefty their premium can be!

My first car was a Vauxhall Viva in 1971.

I remember that my new daughter slept best after a short car journey so used to find myself doing a few mils every evening.

One night I stopped to buy an evening paper and opened the passenger door to place the paper. My new baby was in the passenger seat and this was before proper baby seats.

I did a u-turn; the passenger door opened and my darling baby fell ou onto the road. I panicked and did an emergency stop.

Luckily all was well – not nearly as much traffic then as now.

She’s a mother herself now, to my two wonderful grandsons and I’m pleased to tell you that she takes vehicle safety extremely seriously. They both sit in very secure child seats.

    Regards
    John

I had a Suzuki SC100x, like the picture in the first post, only in silver.

It was a great little car, looked good and performed well on the road. The expense of keeping it on the road (rust, suspension etc…) meant this would be the only second hand car I purchased for over 17 years (the next being a specially modified off-road prepared Jeep used as a 2nd vehicle).

WOW some of you guys have had WAY too many cars for one person 😀

    my first car was a
    1985 Pontiac Firebird……and I still miss her
    then a
TransAm – that was stolen out from in front of my apt. in West Hollywood CA ( I think a guy I was dating at the time had something to do with it…little shit)
a Gold 1986 (?) Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce
    then another
TransAm for a bit which I traded in for a
WAY TOO FAST FOR ME Convt. Mustang…that I had to get rid of before I died
    then another
1989 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, which I still have….what a piece of crap, but I can’t part with it for some odd reason (it has what I like to call "character" 😉 — or what you might call —RUST)
    Isuzu Rodeo
    Isuzu Trooper
    and
now that Alfa that sits in the driveway (doesn’t even start and the brakes have seized)
and a Toyota Tundra Pick-up (gas guzzler)
Which I hate driving cause’ I’m just not a pick-up type ‘girl’ but I’m stuck with it for work 😥

edited: ooh I forgot, my second TransAm was Also STOLEN
but I got it back…..bad shape but I got it back

no one in their right mind would steal the Alfa :lol1:
