  • What vinyl for interior glass/acrylic plaques reverse print?

Posted by Myles Brewer on October 24, 2017 at 2:14 pm

    Hi All,
Just wondering what vinyls people use for making up reverse print graphics fitted to the back of glass or acrylic plaque type signs for wall mounting on stand offs.

I have some to produce on glass panels that will be reverse printed onto clear & backed with white. They are permanent but internal.

Would a regular monomeric combination work or could there be shrinkage issues over time?

I was considering Avery 3041 transparent mono, but which white do I use to back this up? Could a white sign vinyl work like Avery 700?

Will be printing with HP26500 Latex.

Would normally back it up with its matching white counter part. I’d be guilty of printing on the laminate and then backing with white.

Hi Andrew, yes I’ve heard that some use the laminate to print on but also heard it doesn’t print as well or not as vibrant & not sure would it take the heat from the 26500?

We’ve used laminate in the past (Metamark MG305), we’ve also used Orajet 3164 (cheap mono) as we had it in stock as part of a regular job we did.

Never had a problem printing on laminate, you should be OK if backing with white, if backing with etch we use a clear profile, which puts down more ink, so it’s more solid.

    Thanks David,
trouble is with using a laminate to print on is I tend to only get matt rather than gloss which I don’t think would work as it’s not quite so clear. I do have an Avery 2000 gloss lam which I could back with Avery 2800 white if the lam prints ok.

BTW congrats on your court case win :claps: So glad you stuck with it, it’s far too easy to just let things like this go due to the time & hassle involved but it’s the principal that’s important & the more people that stick it out the less it would happen!

By chance today we’re printing 250 window stickers, yellow & black. I’m using 3164 again. I was tempted to print only the black, and flood coat the yellow, but I don’t have any yellow in stock so being lazy just printed it all.

Yes it was surprisingly straight forward to bring the case, and I’d encourage others to actively protect their intellectual property, I learnt a lot in doing so, and would probably do it slightly differently if I had to do it again.

Just did a test print on the Avery DOL 2000 & it appears to have worked a treat. Maybe a slight tweak of profile but otherwise I think it’s a goer  At least with it being polymeric it will hopefully be less liable to shrinkage over time.

Trouble is David, by the time you have to do it again (hopefully not too soon!!) the system will probably have changed.
Still it’s good to know it works.

    Hi Hugh,
Have you done any this way that have been around a few years that would confirm no shrinkage occurs?

Nothing that’s local enough to check I’m afraid, no complaints and as vinyl sticks to acrylic like the proverbial I’ve not given them any thought since making them!
