  • What vinyl for a painted wall?

Posted by Denise Goodfellow on October 25, 2013 at 1:23 pm

    Hi

We have just fitted out an estate agent, they now want their logo applied to the wall.

We normally use hexis, they do have a range for walls, but not in the colour the customer wants.

Has anyone else used other makes with good results. The job is 70 miles away so we don`t want to be called back out again.

    thank you

So long as it’s not been painted in A) matt emulsion or B) ‘easy clean’ TEFLON containing paint most vinyl will adhere quite well.

Generally, the thinner & sticker the vinyl the better.

If digital prints, weigh up the pro’s & con’s of laminating it.

Done many, many walls in 3M 50 series, Ritrama ‘O’ range (both VERY sticky) or MD3 for print as it’s what we carry.

We have had great results with Ritrama and KPMF apart from when someone had used one of those paints that has a chalky effect finish!

are you talking an emulsioned plasterboard wall or an actual "brick and masonry" wall Denise?

cut vinyl text will stick no problem to emulsion plasterboard walls and the like.
most brands of vinyl will adhere no problem.
your issue will always be how well the wall has been painted though.
for instance, if the walls not been painted well, then its not uncommon for the paint to flake off when removing the actual application paper.

if the walls are rough brick and masonry then you will need a good cast or an actual wall wrap vinyl. don’t laminate it though as your only going to prohibit it conforming to the texture more as it will be thicker.
that’s unless you want a gloss or matt finish of course.

you will also need a soft conformable roller to apply the vinyl along with a heat gun.

    its a painted plastered wall.

I did a test in our shop with our normal brand (hexis) while it went on fine, it could be easily picked off.

Just trying to stop the customer keep rining me up saying its peeling as the job is not local.

i havent used Hexis cut vinyl, only wrap. so cant give fair comment, but would have thought it still fine unless the wall has a powdery type finish to it. i.e. rub hand over it and can see residual chalk finish on hand?

i dont like applying vinyl to plasterboard type walls, but i have many times and results have been as posted above.
be careful removing the app tape though, nothing worse when it lifts little bits of paint or large patches! 🙄

    best of luck 😀
