    Hi Im Adam
I live on the Isle of Wight

    Im new to this business.
Im hopeing on starting my own sign company business.
I have bought 2 vinyl cutters in the last 3 months from starting up. I have a 3 bedroom house, Im converting 2 of the rooms in to my office so I should have enough room as im working from a shed at the moment.

What im after is some help with what vinyl I should use for short term indoor and outdoor signs. Im using ri-mark 3-5 yr at the moment and LG Chem 5-7 yr for vehicles and out door signs like shops. I have been reading the forum for the last few days trying to get as much info as I can about everything.
From what I can see most people like oracal 651 short term/indoor and 751 for out side/shop and vehicles. Should I run down my stock now and order this oracal once I need some more.

And if theres any pointer any can give me to help me start out my own business

    Many thanks
    Adam

Hi Adam and welcome, if you introduce yourself again in the say hello forum then you will probably get a lot more help as a lot of the members like people to do this and maybe add a picture when you get time, we are a friendly lot but we are also nosey and like to see who we are talking to.

As for vinyls, different people like different vinyls and a lot of it is personal choice. I wouldn’t look at running down your stocks of vinyl just yet as you might not be so keen on the Oracal vinyl yourself.

I would start by contacting some of the suppliers like Europoint, Cox Plastics, Amari, Spandex and ask for samples of their Vinyl. You can then try each one yourself, see how it cuts, weeds and applies yourself and make your own decission from there.

As for starting in Business its the same as starting any business, get out and meet people, always carry professionally made business cards etc etc. Try searching these boards for anything you need to know about as a lot of topics have already been discussed and you will get answers that much quicker.

Good luck with your new business

Martin has given you good advice here. I certainly agree with everything he says here.

Only thing I’ll add is that the hardest period in any new business is the first 18 months. Most new businesses that go under, do so in the first 12 months. Don’t fall into the trap of selling you stuff cheap just to get business in the door.

Know your operating costs, know what you need to earn to keep the doors open, and set yourself a limit that you will not drop below. No good doing excellent work, but being known as a provider of cheap signs. You’ll never earn a decent living with that sort of clientele.

All the best in your new venture tho. What did you do before your decided to take this path?

I live in Shanklin on the isle of wight

I have a full time job building the wings for the new Airbus A380 double decker plane. I have parents that have had there own business and have done well from it and now retired at 47 yr old. i wouldnt mind following in there foot steps.

Im still young and a very hard worker and willing to put every thing in to starting my own business. I think it will be worth doing so.

Im very lucky theres a forum like this with all you nice guys on it for the extra help when needed. (Always)

welcome aboard mate, as martin has said, its a self preference thing. no one vinyl is the best for you. the key is, finding the best brands which will narrow down your options, then trying some of the ones the suit your pocket. at this point you will be down to about 5 maybe more… its really a trial and error stage after that… some good makes you hate, some you don’t.
oracal is a very good make in my honest opinion and i use it for the bulk of my work. i don’t use 651, but 751 for basically everything it can be used on.

Im a oracal 751c man aswell as rob says does just about everything and anything, ive used a bit of metamark which is ok but compared to 751c its like cardboard 🙄 , ive had victory phoning me over the last week wanting me to try JAC vinyl, iv heard a few people mentioning it but not much, iv got them to send me 10mtrs of it to try but they have a special on atm buy a full 50mtr roll for £50 610mm yep £1 mtr and you will get a free roll of app tape with it, might be of interest to you this 1 adam as its cheapish vinyl and worth a try.

Adam the letters are flat cut acrylic probably done on a CNC router then attached to plastic locators. I think Rich has a router so he probably cut them himself but you can buy them form a number of trade suppliers.
