• What to wear to work

Posted by Simon Worrall on April 23, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Ive just been listening to a BBC podcast about dressing for work.
It seems that it pays to dress up for customers, and the better dressed you are the better contracts you get.
I dress pretty casual – and that is a generous description.
When I go to work in clean gear, by lunchtime I am covered in paint, solvents, tape, and anything else that installations and manufacturing can throw at me.
Being a one man show, I also need to deal with customers.
Exactly who does a customer expect to meet when she enters a sign making establishment?
What is appropriate workwear for a signwriter?
What do you all wear to work?

    Simon.

I try to look smart at that first meeting simon but its diffucult if yout meeting customers half way thtough the day. I think most people appreciate its a dirty job sometimes. Lets face it its all about your attituds towards people.i think you can dress up in a 3 piece suite but if thats wrong then everythings out the window

each of us has about 2-3 sweatshirts and 2-3 poloshirts, this has our logo on it, we do have a few button shirts too but forget about the lower half, just concentrate on the upper half

The logo makes it easier for people to approach you thinking that you are a sign maker, unless ur a recognisable character.

We all say signs and vehicles are great advertising vehicles, i think the same applies for work clothes.

SOme clothes are better at staying clean but if your a painter then it will be down to ur skills 😀

I generally dress according to my day, if I’ve meetings etc I’ll try to be more formal, for the past two weeks however, I’ve been in my work logo’d polo shirts, cargo style shorts and flip flops! Had to wear shoes three times this past couple of weeks, awful considering the sun was out!

Black workwear trousers, polo shirt embroidered with my logo on left chest and across shoulders with a fleeces embroidered the same.

We are in a business that sells an image so I think it is important to look right.

My regular attire consists of a checked shirt combined with a brown leather waistcoat, denim jeans, frilly leather chaps and a Stetson

    Yee haw :shoot3:

A month or so ago I got myself some dickies cargo trousers, shorts, belts and matching t’s logo’d them all up myself and wear them to work and clients along with my logo’s fleece if chilly…..

It works wonders, I also have some spares for when I take labourers on site with me along with some written hard hats if needed and high viz….

Sets a really good impression, I keep getting asked if I the company has reps working in other areas…lol

First thing I did when I took over my company.

Changed the name, and got it out on my work clothes.

Blue work trousers, blue polo shirt and jumpers, and my jacket.

Just company name, and phone number. My jacket had a larger area so added a few lines of text advertising what services I offer.

My thought is you wouldn’t pay £1.00 for a tin of beans from Netto. Look professional, charge professional, they feel they’re dealing with a professional company.

That’s all OK for you guys, but what about the female signmakers? Polo shirts just aren’t smart on most women!

And no, mankini’s are not great either 😳

Polo shirts are just fine, but you ladies just want to complicate the whole affair with a complete range/wardrobe of workwear plus accessories then deliberate over what to wear on a given day/musing over does my bum look big in this debate before declaring there is nothing to wear 😀 😀

    I’ll get my coat 😳

there’s absolutely nothing that can be added to that!!

further to my earlier post, and just in case I gave the perception that i’m a slob who barely makes it out of a dressing gown before going to work…..

I do appreciate that a professional look is good, and if I’m off out to see customers or on a job etc, then obviously I’ll dress up in appropriate leg and foot wear.

for the most part, I don’t have customers here willy nilly, 99% of the time I know they’re coming and -if warranted- will again be dressed appropriately.

however, in this glorious weather, i’m working outside on a couple of big signs so… flip flops / cargo shorts it is!

Do I think a builder is any less professional because he owns a 5yr old beat up transit van and turns up wearing tatty jeans and a tee shirt? a painter no good because he’d covered in paint? or a stable owner cos they’ve come in stinking of horse doo? of course not!

I do always wear my branded work polo’s, Hi vis, and underpants though, as does anyone who works with me on site (they don’t get the pants though, have to earn them!).

I wear black trainers, black JCB work pants, Black polo shirt with company logo front and rear and also a nice black jacket with company logo on the back and front also.

There has been a few times when ive attended meetings ive put shoes, jeans and a Shirt on depending on the client.

I think for me i would guess most of my customers would expect me to turn up in work gear like some say on here but i always make sure is in company gear not just random everyday wear.

Like most people have stated, I have Orange tee’s with grey sleeves, printed logo on front website accross the shoulders, grey and orange cargo trousers and hiking boots ( in case I get my marching orders lol )
These colours all match my logo and invoices etc !
I have clients who ask me to wear their t-shirts, but they are always BLACK, as if we dont sweat enough they choose BLACK ?
