out of interest i just wondered if the hand you paint with effects which way you create shadows? do you prefer doing it one way or does it depend on the job?

    hi rachel!!

i too run the shadow down to the left!! 😛
ed sometimes does the opposite, i think as you say it depends on what job your doing & what looks right!! 😀 😀

I always shadow to the left as well.
But last year in Ireland I noticed that many signs are shadowed to the right!
I was always told to shadow script on the right.
Of course, if you have both shadowed script and straight letters
on the same sign, be sure to shadow them all the same way!

I was always taught to do a right hand shade. For me it always ‘fell’ right with the brush, I don’t think there is a right or wrong just personnal preference.

Dosn’t it depend entirely on which way the sun supposedly is hitting the text? morning east- shadow right -noon cast shadow from top- and afternoon shadow left and again technically a painted letter would not cast a shadow at all because it has no thickness to speak of?

Steve, when done correctly, a painted shadow makes a painted letter look 3-D!

At least most people get it right and do the shadow down, I’ve seen some that go up “So tell me where in the world does the sun shine upwards you MUPPET!!!” :lol1:

Surely the sun shines upward in Aussi steve :lol1:

To me it depends on the font and agree with other comments that script should allways be to the right, but I do have a tendancy to go to the right anyway but I put that down to being left handed. :funky2:
