  • What should I look for in a good RIP PC

I need to get a new tower solely for ripping. What should be my main priorities, a ton of Ram and graphics card? Or is it the processors that do all the hard work. Comments appreciated

If it’s just a RIP them things like graphics cards are unimportant, you should be looking at Processor, memory and Hard disk (speed & size)
Don’t know enough about RIP software to know if it makes use of the multi core features of newer processors. Maybe someone like Stafford could help more with that.

CPU makes a big difference but not as much as RAM and HDD, i just swapped my HDD for a SSD one and files are ripping nearly 3 times faster and photo-shop is rapid as well now,

Hi…Running Uniform Grenadier and upgrading to Wasatch 6.9 monday. Also may be buying a new Roland LEJ 640 UV later this year. Connection is ethernet

SSD’s seem to be a really worthwhile upgrade even at the high price. Hard drive speed seems to be a real bottle neck to a computers performance. I cant comment from experience but it will be my next move in the not to distant future.

well traditional SSDs are not good for small number processing so not really suited for RIPs however a new breed is out called Hybrid SSD which is half harddrive and memory, keen to see if they are good for RIPS.

Raid setup for a number of harddrives would be good plan, like a Raid 5.

Depending on RIP design, some use single thread to process, which means you look for the fastest process around, some use multiple processors which then you got to look at quads/six core processors depending on printer demand.

i remember when i was building my computer seeing 10000 rpm hard drives wd raptor i think they were. theyre bound to be some job? Dont know what they are priced like though. Any thoughts on them dave?

For me i have a hard drive would that paired up with a ssd work like a hybrid?
