What’s everyones thought’s on software subscriptions?
Posted by David.Smith on February 25, 2013 at 12:57 pmWhat’s everyones thought’s on software subscriptions? We currently subscribe to adobe CS suite and get the whole lot for less than £40 a month and updates every few weeks. Just wish signlab did a subscription based version as we’re still on version 7.1 but vinyl only and really need print and cut now.

i like the convenience of the subscriptions, as just now I am not in a position to buy it outright. I pay £22 a month inc. vat for the latest corel draw and its fab 😀

Yeah thats what I like about it, would love signlab 9 but just can’t justify spending that amount after getting new printer then a new computer to run it.

I’m not convinced by subscription software.
When I bought a new Imac, I needed all new software because it wouldn’t run CS2.
Suppose they update their software and it no longer runs on your hardware then what? Buy all new hardware?
Until I need to upgrade (on CS5 now) I wont bother.

There is that, but with the way things are at the minute I’d have thought it would be a while until they grow to outdate software again. We try to keep on top of our hardware and upgrade every 3 years or so. Currently own our Imac but lease our macbook pro as its better tax wise for us.

how much is it to upgrade from 7 – 9?
it cant be that much, possibly £250 ish??

They don’t have print & cut Denise so would be expensive to upgrade.
I’m not sure where I stand on this to be honest, there are pro’s & con’s to both ways of software licencing.

On the Adobe one. Useful when you get files from designers done in the latest version. I hope more companies move to this way instead of charging sky high one-off prices.

Jon, over time I am guessing that you will end up paying the same or more for it than the one off price. Sure Adobe have done their homework before switching to this way of licencing. The way it now works might encourage more people to use the software which means they could drop the price & still make the same money which would be something for users to look forward to in the future.

Yeah its more about spreading the cost over the year really and getting the upgrades as soon as they’re released. As Jon says hopefully more companies will start going this way, might hopefully bring the prices down a bit.

David is the contract on a monthly or yearly basis, you say £40 per month and also mention spreading the cost over a year which may mean a 12 month deal, just curious on how flexible the contract is ?

They offer 2 options 1 month rolling subscription which is great for those who don’t use it much to just subscribe now and again or a 12 month rolling contract which is slightly cheaper. I think Illustrator on its own is only £17 a month on the 12 month plan.
